Seth Rogen has always been a Muppet in human skin, it’s no surprise he’s the one reviving The Muppet Show.
Disney+ has just announced a 2026 special starring (and exec-produced by) Sabrina Carpenter. Perfect timing too; it drops for the show’s 50th anniversary.
It could kick off a new season. This season could be part of the chaotic, feel-good variety series. The series first took over TV in the 70s!
Rogen’s rolling deep with his Point Gray Pictures crew, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, and Alex McAtee. The Muppet’s Studio’s own David Lightbody, Leigh Slaughter, and Michael Steinbach are also on board.
Basically: the gang’s all here, and the Muppets are ready for their comeback, premiering sometime in 2026.
The new special has the muppets back in their OG theater, cooking up a fresh variety show. It’s coming from 20th Television and Disney Branded TV. Muppet veterans like Matt Vogel and Eric Jacobson join the producer squad.
Longtime puppeteers Bill Barretta, Dave Goelz, Peter Linz, and David Rudman are ready. Both Vogel and Jacobson are also on deck to bring the heartfelt Muppet crew to life.
Jim Henson birthed the Muppets in 1955. Disney scooped them up in 2004.
The fuzzy icons first popped up on Sesame Street in 1969. But their true revelation came in 1976 with The Muppet Show.
All five seasons are streaming on Disney+ for those who need a binge refresher.
The franchise also has a string of bangers on the big screen. These include The Muppet Movie (1979), The Great Muppet Caper (1981), and The Muppets Take Manhattan (1984). There is also a pile of spin-offs. There is even a holiday TV movie (It’s A Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie, 2002).
So in other words, The Muppets never really left… they’re just turning the nostalgia dial back up to 11.
