Steve Lacy Confirms ‘Spider-Man Brand New Day’ Leak

In anticipation of the upcoming release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, fans are discussing alleged online leaks of what the plot could have in store for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Recently an anonymous post on the forum-style website 4chan claims to know several of the plot points for the highly awaited film. Marvel has always taken great efforts to keep their movies a surprise, even going as far to withhold the full plot from actors, remove certain characters from scenes shown in trailers, or release other red herrings.

Singer Steve Lacy further fueled film speculations and sparked more debates after his appearance at the Los Angeles premiere of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. On the red carpet, an interviewer asked Steve, who has a song featured on the movie’s soundtrack, “Out of all of the characters in the film you’re aware of and, without spoiling anything, who is your favorite? Or who are you most excited to see?”

In response, Steve answered, “You know what? Jean. I like Jean. She’s the villain but there’s a reason to her madness,” prompting the interviewer to ask if that was a “spoiler,” to which he didn’t confirm or deny.

Spider-Man fans immediately caught on to what Steve hinted at as his reply confirmed that franchise newbie Sadie Sink would portray X-Men’s telekinetic mutant Jean Grey in the movie, and would also be revealed as a villain. A theory that’s been circulating online for some time now.

Social erupted with upset after Steve’s accidental slip-up, with some being disappointed that the Dark Red singer wasn’t more discreet.

“The way Sadie has been dodging spoilers all press tour only for Steve Lacy to drop it like it’s nothing… girl is in the trenches rn,” one person wrote on X. Another added, “Bro just needed one interview to destroy everything.”

During the massive cultural event that was Avengers: Endgame, Marvel kept an extremely tight grip on potential leaks, while fans desperately tried to avoid getting spoiled.

A user who reposted the details of the 4chan leak on a Reddit thread wrote, “Normally I don’t spread rumors but this is so odd that I’m half inclined Marvel Comics and Disney are insane enough to do it, and wanted to hear from you guys. As always, take it with a grain of salt, could (and likely to) be fake.” This came before Steve accidentally spilled the beans while on the Spider-Man: Brand New Day Los Angeles film premiere red carpet.

The spoilers in the thread read, “Disney is planning on soft-rebooting the MCU, with the X-Men at the forefront, built with their cast/interpretations. They want Peter to be the link between old and new, and because he’s arguably their most popular IP. This role was originally meant for Ms Marvel/Kamala Khan, but the reception of The Marvels and her general drop in popularity has changed this.”

Another spoiler claimed, “Rumored upcoming Marvel Comics event involves an X-Gene virus affecting many civilians and heroes, revealing Spider-Man to be immune. What he first thinks is due to his unique biology, will in fact be an upcoming retcon where Peter will be revealed to be a true mutant this entire time. This would also explain recent events where Peter’s spider sense and abilities have been “held back” until now. Spider-Sense allegedly making Peter immune to Cerebro too.”

The alleged spoilers left many with questions, and even with some questioning the vision for the forthcoming film.

“Making Spiderman a mutant would be stupid. There are a lot of bad decisions in recent MCU but that would be the worst of them all,” one Redditor wrote.

“I don’t know, it sounds believable. They retconned Ms Marvel to be a mutant and it’s clear, for whatever reason, that someone at Disney wants a mutant connection between a current property,” someone else shared.

“Stan Lee’s idea was that anyone could be Spider-Man. Peter being a mutant would go directly against that. This has to be fake,” one commented.
