AI Actress Tilly Norwood’s Upcoming Film Debut Shakes Hollywood

AI has been all the buzz in the tech world, and it is now making its way into movies. According to CBS, Tilly Norwood, an AI-generated actress created by the UK-based company Particle 6, is set to star in Misaligned, a film from the same company that created her. 

Norwood is in a prominent role in the picture, not just as a small part or background character. Ever since Particle 6’s founder and former actress, Eline Van der Velden, revealed her in 2025, she has been molded over 2,000 iterations. 

The film is going to be a “surreal digital world located somewhere up in the Cloud,” as a “coming-of-age story infused with existential AI chaos.”

The plot is very meta as she plays an AI being with no experiences but access to other people’s minds and backstories. A clear commentary on the limits and perceptions of AI. Velden has stated they want to explore AI’s capabilities in film and share it with the public. It appears to otherwise be traditional, as aside from Norwood, since there are standard writers, directors, and other artists involved. Velden believes that AI can be a tool to support creative ideas but needs proper guidance. 

Norwood has had her fair share of discussion, as many criticize her for not being human, but being a synthetic performer that sparks the feeling that, “[C]reativity is, and should remain, human-centered. It has no life experience to draw from, no emotion and, from what we’ve seen, audiences aren’t interested in watching computer-generated content untethered from the human experience.”

With many of the Gen-Z crowd not wanting anything to do with it, and other artists like Alice Cooper saying it has no soul, Norwood has an uphill battle to fight to win over the hearts of both critics and audiences alike. An interesting aspect of this also involves worker actions. As Norwood is not alive in the same sense as most people are, that means things like pushback and alterations are thrown out the window.

For instance, actors and actresses have pushed for changes. Robert Downey Jr. pushed for the “Avengers” ending Shawarma scene. There was also pushback with Leonard Nimoy’s Vulcan Nerve Pinch.

Norwood will not and could even be too agreeable. It also raises questions about workers’ rights. Can Norwood reject working for 16 hours a day, likeness being used, push back against decisions? If the SAG-AFTRA and copyright laws do indeed say AI is not capable of being human, that does present serious implications about the ethical side of things. 

Like many creations before her, it’s worth noting that she herself doesn’t have free agency and as such, can neither speak for herself nor against decisions made for her. While it’s got some time before it comes out, Misaligned has some interesting ideas and conversations surrounding it.
