Almost five years ago, the rebooted “Save by the Bell” aired on Peacock TV on November 25, 2020. The cast featured young newcomers alongside original cast members. Elizabeth Berkley, Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Mario Lopez reprised their roles as Jessie Spano, Zack Morris and AC Slater.
The three alumni from the fictional high school Bayside were back at Bayside High as accomplished adults.
Zack was the new California Governor and father of popular Bayside High student Mac Morris, played by Mitchell Hoog. Jessie was Bayside High’s new guidance counselor, and Slater was the new cool gym teacher at Bayside. Jessie was also the mother of Bayside High student Jamie Spano, played by Belmont Cameli.
The reboot also had new characters like Aisha, played by Alycia Pascual Pena and Lexi, played by Josie Totah.
However, fast forward to 2022, the anticipated reboot was canceled by Netflix after two seasons. It reportedly attracted a decent viewership early on, but it supposedly wasn’t strong enough to be renewed for a third season, according to Slash Film.
Meanwhile, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, former NBCUniversal executive Susan Rovner explained that the people who greenlit the reboot had a different creative vision for Peacock that didn’t come to fruition in the end.
“I didn’t greenlit either ine of those shows. I think that also falls under it’s hard to get a scale on a streaming service with comedies. They didn’t bring in the scale that the people that greenlit them was hoping for. I think it was just too soon. The people before me were leaning more into comedy, and I can’t really speak as to why Ultimately, it wasn’t the right thing to lean into initially.”
Earlier this year, when Saved by the Bell star Tiffani Thiessen was asked by People whether there would be another version of a reboot in the future, she told the news outlet, “I don’t think so. I think they tried it,” admitting that she “loved” the initial reboot. Tiffani was beloved for her role as the pretty, preppy, and popular cheerleader Kelly Kapowski on the show.
