Taylor Swift leaves easter eggs that reignites a 15-year-long feud with Kanye West.
No matter how you slice it, it seems that Taylor Swift has a way with words. Most slyly, Swift made an edit of one of her songs from her recent album, The Tortured Poets Department. The blink-and-you’ll-miss-it change is very slight, but Swifties are buzzing about it. Her song, thanK you aIMee was changed to thank You aimEe in an apparent diss at Kanye West, now known as Ye.
In her original title, the song’s words are stylized by spelling KIM, presumably referencing West’s ex-wife, Kim Kardashian, who she also had issues with in the past on behalf of Ye. The redo now does the same, but the font is larger on Y and E, most likely to spell out Ye.
In the newly released live version of the song, Swift’s lyrics, “I wrote a thousand songs that you find uncool / I built a legacy that you can’t undo / But when I found the scars there’s a moment of truth / That there wouldn’t be this if there hadn’t been you.” Fans can’t help but wonder if the lyrics and song font change are an indirect way of Swift throwing some shade. One fan on X says, “The capitalized letters in ‘thank You aimEe’ tell us who we’re really blocking.”
Going back to 2009, the two superstars began their bumpy and public feud. In a now-infamous move, West ambushed the stage as Swift tried to deliver her acceptance speech at the 2009 MTV VMAs for Best Female Video for her song You Belong With Me. West saying, “Yo Taylor, I’m really happy for you, I’m gonna let you finish, but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time.” Handing the mic back to a flummoxed Swift, audible boos could be heard from the crowd. Then-President Barack Obama calling West “a jackass,” in addition to other public shock, left West calling Swift to apologize 24 hours after the incident.
Then began the battle of the song lyrics. One year after the incident on stage, Swift releases her Speak Now album with the track Innocent which is said to be about the rapper. This leads West to retract his apology telling The New York Times, “I don’t have one regret. If anyone’s reading this waiting for some type of full-on, flat apology for anything, they should just stop reading right now.”
Seen together at the 2015 Grammy Awards, Swift and West started the rumor mill about a possible collaboration. Ironically, that same year, Swift presented West with an award on the same VMA stage they shared six years earlier.
Things started to shift for the seemingly friendly pair in early 2016 when West released his song Famous, off of his The Life of Pablo album. The song lyrics, “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex / Why? I made that b*tch famous” were enough to change the vibe between the two. West headed to then-Twitter to defend himself, saying he got permission from Swift herself to use that line. To further drive home that point, West’s then-wife, Kim Kardashian, backed him up by explaining that there was permission granted in an hour-long phone call between the two artists.
In an interview with GQ, Kardashian says, “She totally knew that that was coming out. She wanted to all of a sudden act like she didn’t. I swear, my husband gets so much sh*t for things when he really was doing proper protocol and even called to get it approved.” Swift’s team acknowledged the phone call but stood firm in the lack of approval on the song lyric.
The drama continued with video footage of the phone call, filmed by Kardashian, showing West on the phone with Swift. Swift can be heard saying, “It’s like a compliment”, referencing the lyric. But soon after, Swift claps back on her Instagram, “I would very much like to be excluded from this narrative, one that I have never asked to be a part of, since 2009.”
With the release of her Reputation album in 2017, Swift is assumed to be referencing West a few times, first in the song, Look What You Made Me Do. Later on the album, Swift sings, “Did you think I wouldn’t hear all the things you said about me?”
The years-long feud seemed to die off in 2020 and ultimately, it was proven that Swift had never approved the lyric. Swift briefly addressed the situation in late 2023, saying it brought her down, emotionally.
All has been fairly quiet until this recent song title update from Swift. But West may have started this ball rolling in particular with his new album release Vultures 2. West, along with rapper Lil Wayne, released a song mentioning Swift and her current boyfriend, Travis Kelce. The line heard in the song, Lifestyle. mentions the Kansas City Chiefs tight end, rapping, “I twist my Taylor spliffs tight at the end like Travis Kelce.”
X users have their opinions, “Society has passed the need for a new Kanye album.” Another X user, “Taylor Swift is the standard! Like every single person name drops her for clout!” But others on West’s side were happy to see the album release, “How is this not album of the year now?” And more, “WE FINALLY GETTING THIS F*CKIN ALBUM.”
