Kalshi, the prediction market, has launched an entire hub, or centralized system, for participants to make bets on the upcoming midterms.
The prediction market is a place where people can make bets on the future outcomes of events, from sports to politics and everything in between. According to CNBC, gamblers will be able to make bets based on who will win their respective bids for the 2026 midterm election. It is worth noting that Kalshi claimed 75% of those on the site are there to check for probabilities and not necessarily to commit money to “throw their proverbial hat into the ring” in a manner of speaking.
In addition to those getting in on the political action, Kalshi included some analysis, statistics, and other information to give participants more insight into the candidates and their chances of winning their respective races.
Kalshi CEO Tarek Mansour said prediction markets are hard to infiltrate with political bias.
“They cut through polarization and show you what the wisdom of the crowds actually believes, backed by real money, not rhetoric,” said Mansour, an MIT grad and one-time trader at Citadel and analyst at Goldman Sachs.
This is just one of the ways that Kalshi has expanded its investment into the American governmental sector. In May, Kalshi unveiled the American Power Index (or KPOW for short). The KPOW is calling itself the “S&P of politics.”
The evidence and foresight behind launching the election hub has already more than spoken for itself, as an NBC News analysis found that $197 million has been traded on the midterms so far, with more than $30 million for House of Representatives and U.S. Senate seats.
However, there is some controversy surrounding the site. For instance, while there are bets on political outcomes, other predictions appear to try to circumnavigate legal limits.
From the Office of the Attorney General in Washington state, the site has been found to have facilitated practices that have gotten them into hot water.
According to a statement on the matter from the Attorney General Office, “In one Kalshi advertisement, one person texts another that they “found a way to bet on the NFL even though we live in Washington,” which seems to acknowledge that Kalshi knows that they are attempting to skirt state law.”
Another concern has been about potential insider trading. The site gives some information to users, the investigation centers around just how informed a bettor was.
Gabriel Perez, a teleprompter operator for President Donald Trump, is under investigation by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission for his knowledge of Trump’s planned remarks and for winning $100,000 from Kalshi.
In addition to these two cases, a third issue has been raised, the topics allowed. Betting on government races or sports teams is one thing the site has allowed users to bet on, including measles cases, and FDA decisions.
Kalshi has had criticism that minors were able to find ways to gamble. According to Setareh Law Group, age-verification issues and state loopholes have been used to get around laws prohibiting underage gambling.
