Aaliyah, also known as Aaliyah Dana Houghton, who died at the young age of 22 due to a tragic plane crash in the Bahamas in the early oughts, shared a special interest in major book series.
From a young age, the American singer, model, and dancer was given the monikers “the Princess of R&B” and “the queen of urban pop” for completely changing the landscape of R&B, hip hop, and pop. Aaliyah had a strong appreciation for music, books, and movies, including J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books, which were adapted for film throughout the 2000s.
“If I’m not going to take a bath to relax, maybe I’ll just get a really good book. Right now, I’m totally obsessed with Harry Potter. I love Harry Potter. I’m on the second book [Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets],” she said on MTV’s now-canceled series Stripped before her death.
Aaliyah wasn’t just into books, as she also had favorite horror series, and according to Complex, she revealed that her favorite horror movies were Scream, Misery, and Halloween during an interview. While many might not have known that Aaliyah was into Harry Potter, some might not have been aware that she also had a close relationship with R&B pioneer Gladys Knight.
Knight used to be Aaliyah’s aunt because from 1974 to 1979 she was married to the One in A Million singer’s uncle, Barry Hankerson, who was instrumental in Aaliyah’s career.
Also, Knight helped Aaliyah’s career, allowing her to perform with her in a five-night performance run in Las Vegas when Aaliyah was only 11.
