Dwayne Johnson Opens Up About ‘Dream’ Broadway Debut

Hollywood star Dwayne Johnson says he has no plans to give up on his long-held dream of performing on Broadway, even if scheduling conflicts have delayed the project he hoped to share with longtime friend Kevin Hart.

While promoting Disney’s live-action Moana in New York earlier this month, Johnson revealed that he and Hart spent nearly three years discussing a Broadway revival of Neil Simon’s classic comedy The Odd Couple. However, Hart’s busy filming schedule has forced the project to remain on hold for now.

Johnson told reporters that Hart is booked “for the next three to five years,” making it difficult to find time for the production. Despite the delay, Johnson made it clear he still intends to make his Broadway debut.

“I’m not letting that dream go,” Johnson said, according to Deadline.

The actor explained that the production had already attracted major Broadway talent. According to Johnson, the project involved acclaimed producer Jeffrey Seller, best known for Hamilton, and Tony Award-winning director Thomas Kail, raising excitement about what could become one of Broadway’s biggest celebrity productions.

Although the original plan centered on Johnson and Hart starring together in The Odd Couple, Johnson joked that his Broadway debut could ultimately take a different direction.

“Maybe it’s The Odd Couple. Maybe it’s a musical,” Johnson said, according to Deadline.

Johnson is best known for blockbuster films including Jumanji, Fast & Furious, Black Adam, and Disney’s Moana. While audiences often associate him with action films, he has increasingly expanded into dramatic and musical performances throughout his acting career.

Hart and Johnson have built one of Hollywood’s most recognizable comedic partnerships after starring together in Central Intelligence and both recent Jumanji films. Their chemistry on screen has fueled fan interest in seeing the pair perform together on a live stage.

Neil Simon’s The Odd Couple originally premiered on Broadway in 1965 before becoming an award-winning film and several television adaptations. The comedy remains one of the most frequently revived plays in American theater, making it an attractive choice for a modern celebrity-led production.

Although no timetable has been announced, Johnson’s comments suggest discussions surrounding his Broadway ambitions remain active whenever scheduling allows.

For now, Johnson is focused on promoting Disney’s live-action Moana, where he reprises his role as the demigod Maui, while continuing work on several upcoming film projects.

Fans hoping to see Johnson and Hart share a Broadway stage may have to wait several more years, but Johnson says the dream remains very much alive.
