The viral Netflix show Squid Game is back for more deadly drama later this year. On Wednesday, July 31, the streaming giant released a teaser trailer for the second season of the immensely successful show, which features a group of people at the start of a race on a track.
As the camera pans away from their feet, we see some track members falling to the ground, and The Front Man is center camera, who then asks, “It’s been 3 years. Do you want to play a game?”
The second season will pick up with Player 456 (played by Lee Jung-jae) after winning the first Squid Game and follows his determination to find those responsible for the deadly game and to end their cruel sport. Series creator, director and executive producer Hwang Dong-hyuk, says in an open letter to fans of the show, “Seong Gi-hun vowed revenge at the end of Season 1 and returns to join the game again. Will he succeed in getting his revenge?”
Dong-hyuk added “We’ll do our best to make sure we bring you yet another thrill ride.”
Fans on X are sharing the 45-second trailer expressing excitement over returning cast members as well as the promise of the third season.
“What a perfect little Christmas gift,” one X user wrote, referring to Squid Game being released in December of this year.
Another added: “We WILL be watching.”
Squid Game garnered much attention after the first season was released in late 2021 as a story about cash-strapped contestants who decide to participate in children’s games for a winning prize, but with deadly and sometimes gory stakes, audience members were left on the edge of their seats.
As a deeper commentary on social disparities, Squid Games rose to critical acclaim and international attention, becoming the most-watched series on Netflix logging 1.65 billion viewing hours in its first month, surpassing Bridgerton on Netflix.
Squid Game won 6 Emmy awards including Outstanding Lead Actor to Lee Jung-jae. O Yeong-su won a Golden Globe, making him the first Korean-born actor to win the award. A spin-off, reality competition series Squid Game: The Challenge, was released in June 2022 and featured over 450 players competing for a cash prize with challenges based on those in the original show.
The release date for the second season is December 26, 2024, with a third and final season promised in 2025 in the trailer as well.
