Warning: Spoilers for Squid Game Season 2 ahead!
The wait is over for the second season of Netflix’s smash-hit series Squid Game, and now its third and final season is officially confirmed for its release sometime on June 27, 2025. Now, viewers are left to theorize about the cliffhanger and the utterly unknown fate of Seong Gi-hun.
Although Gi-hun successfully infiltrated the game as a returning player, his attempt at revenge on the game makers is ultimately foiled as his friend Park Jung-bae is held at gunpoint by the main guard Front Man just as the two reach the control room. How the consequences of Gi-hun’s actions will play out is yet to be revealed.
“I believe that with that story, I was able to tell everything that I wanted to tell through the story of Squid Game and also in the perspective of Gi-hun as a character, and I thought that we don’t need to tell further stories from here,” according to show creator Hwang Dong-hyuk in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter.
The games will continue as suggested at the end of season two. Following the final credits, three players walk into a room flanked by the giant doll from the “Red Light, Green Light” challenge and her male counterpart.
‘That’s actually a [sneak peek] of Cheol-su, who, like Young-hee, is a new giant doll that we’re going to be showcasing in season 3. And that’s also a hint at the most exciting game in season 3 as well,” Hwang said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
Once he is all done with the post-production of Season 3, Hwang is ready for a long-awaited break from working on this major project, according to Variety. He admits that it is not an easy task to immerse himself in the deadly world he created for Squid Game.
“I’m so sick of Squid Game… I’m so sick of my life making something promoting something,” Hwang jokes in his interview with Variety. “So I’m not thinking about my next project right now. I’m just thinking about going to some remote island and having my own free time without any phone calls from Netflix.”
There is one more aspect that viewers are becoming highly anticipated for in Squid Game 3: a potential surprise cameo by Leonardo Dicaprio. The speculation began after rumors hit that Dicaprio had filmed a minor cameo, with details kept secret to avoid spoilers, according to The Economic Times. However, Netflix denied any involvement with DiCaprio and confirmed that the reports were entirely false, which could leave viewers wondering if there would be any sort of surprise cameo in season 3 – even if it were not by Dicaprio himself.
