The popular Peacock original series Love Island USA has entered its eighth season and faces some criticism regarding its cast.
The show is about a group of islanders searching for love while being tempted by bombshells, the same format as when it started in 2019, just a bit over seven years ago now.
However, a new problem for the series emerged in late May, throwing a monkey wrench into that formula and leaving the executives with a cast in desperate need of some alterations. One of the bombshells, 26-year-old Vasana Montgomery, is the owner of Vanity Square Studios, a beauty salon, and the center of recent controversy.
Montgomery, hailing from Beverton, Oregon, was removed from the villa following fan outrage at the revelation of past videos of her using racial slurs, according to Cosmopolitan. The network did officially apologize for casting her. It said they were made aware of the offending material only after the casting vetting process, because the clips had not been made public until then.
An insider emphasized that their vetting process does try to screen out any problems that may arise, with Cosmopolitan stating that, ”There’s only so many ways to vet someone given all the different technologies and social media that have been in and out over the years.”
Montgomery later took to social media, posting her apology on Instagram.
Because of this, it appears she has not been invited back onto the show. Instead, the management that is presiding over the hit series had to scramble in order to alter the show to accommodate Montgomery’s sudden departure.
Although no footage of her was shot for the current season, a person still had to fill the vacancy left in the wake of her absence. It seems they managed to find a suitable replacement for her, one Gabriel Vanscancelos.
The 26-year-old Brazilian DJ and professional model for Crawford Models entered the villa on day one as a surprise bombshell, having changed from the original group.
Fans have speculated the change was made in order to balance the cast left by Montgomery’s departure. For now, it appears that things are back to their normal ways.
Cosmopolitan’s source has said that moving forward, there will be changes to their process to prevent such slip-ups, explaining “The network is actively looking into ways to better vet contestants that give a more thorough scan of their social media profiles.”
This would include using such tools as “…AI options that will help dissect a potential candidate’s entire digital footprint…precautionary measures are underway, and there will be a change, an improvement, to the vetting process next season.”
It appears that for now, Love Island USA is back in proper form, with fans able to rest easy knowing that the only eliminations are coming from challenges rather than outside controversy.
