Sinners makes history, leading the Oscars with a record breaking nomination.
The nominations for the 98th Academy Awards ceremony are out, led by “Sinners” with a record-breaking 16 nominations.
This year’s top contenders includes “Frankenstein”, “Hamlet”, “Marty Supreme”, “One Battle After Another”, “The Secret Agent,” “Sentimental Value,” “Sinners,” “Sirât,” “Weapons,” and “Wicked: For Good.”
The film received nominations for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Directing, and several other categories, with Michael B. Jordan, who played twins Smoke and Stack. He was nominated for Best Actor for the first time.
“One Battle After Another” follows “Sinners” with 13 nominations, followed by “Frankenstein”, “Marty Supreme”, and “Sentimental Value,” who are all up for best picture, along with “Bugonia,” “F1,” “Hamnet,” “The Secret Agent,” and “Train Dreams.”
First-time acting nominees, along with Jordan, include Jacob Elordi (Frankenstein), Delroy Lindo and Wunmi Mosaku (Sinners), Teyana Taylor (One Battle After Another), and many cast members from the Norwegian drama (Sentimental Value), including Elle Fanning, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, Renate Reinsve, and Stellan Skarsgård.
Taylor recently won Best Supporting Actress at the 2026 Golden globes for her role in One Battle After Another, starring Leonardo DiCaprio delivering an emotional speech that celebrated Black women and young girls and set the internet ablaze with her gown.
Timothée Chalamet, who starred in Marty Supreme, is also nominated for Best Actor for the second year in a row.
Chalamet recently became the youngest to win Best Actor for his role in Marty Supreme at the 2026 Critics’ Choice Awards as well as Best Actor in a Motion Picture at the 2026 Golden Globes, marking his first win at the ceremony after several nominations.
This year, the Oscars have added a new category, Achievement in Casting, to acknowledge foundational roles that play a part in filmmaking but often operate outside the spotlight.
This award honors the art of casting, whether collaborating with a film director to select stars or sifting through polaroids to select supporting actors with the right characters. The casting directors branch of the Academy, which is about 200 members, is also involved in determining a shortlist of 10 movies and the five nominees for best casting.
The nominees this year include Nina Gold (Hamnet), Jenifer Venditti (Marty Supreme), Cassandra Kulukundis (One Battle After Another), Gabriel Domingues (The Secret Agent), and Francine Maisler (Sinners).
Hosted by Conan O’Brien for the second year in a row, the 98th Academy Awards will be held March 15 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles and will air live on ABC and Hulu at 4p.m. PT.
