Today is National Pretzel Day! National Pretzel Day was declared a national holiday by Pennsylvania’s former Governor Ed Rendell in 2003. We all love a good nonsensical holiday, especially one that satisfies your appetite.
These knotted pastries originate as early as the Middle Ages and have somehow twisted their way into our hearts. According to History.com, the original name for the tasty treat was “bracellae,” which translates into “little arms.” Later on, it was said that they were called “petriolas,” which translates into “little rewards,” because the monks handed them out as rewards to young children for correctly saying their prayers, says History.com.
Well, our prayers have been answered, and our reward will be well—pretzels! If you’re interested in celebrating National Pretzel Day, check out these pretzel shops that are giving out free treats all Friday!
