In January, Bowen Yang and Rachel Sennott announced the 2025 Oscar nominations. Emilia Perez received 13 nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actress. The Brutalist and Wicked followed shortly behind with 10.
Due to the California wildfire, the Oscar announcements were delayed.
“We are all devastated by the impact of the fires and the profound losses experienced by so many in our community,” Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang said in a joint statement.
Now that the Oscar nominations are out with the event, which will take place on March 2, this season is fast approaching and has become strange and unpredictable.
The Brutalist is the favorite to win the most awards, with 44% support. Anora and Wicked follow behind with a staggering 22%. People can tell the trajectory through Kalshi. Another unique aspect of this year’s Oscars is Kalshi forecasting which film will get the most awards and wins.
The movie Brutalist is no stranger to winning awards; at the 2025 Golden Globes, it won an award for Best Motion Picture and Best Director, with Adrien Brody winning Best Male Actor.
The film’s synopsis describes a Holocaust survivor who immigrated to the U.S. in 1947 to start a new life for himself and his wife. The movie explores ambition, identity, and life themes in America after World War II.
Some viewers believe that even though The Brutalist and Emilia Perez can be compelling, they don’t tell the whole story about this season of the Oscars. They noticed that movies would get attention for weeks and then suddenly disappear.
“Movies that surged to the front fade weeks or even days later,” Hollywood Reporter Steven Zeitchik stated.
The film Emilia Perez received criticism, including the fact that, for some viewers, it “started strong but quickly lost momentum.” Viewers also called the writing “overwrought” and the performances “flat.” The same criticism is said about Wicked.
“Emilia Perez and Wicked have buzz and popularity going for them. They do not have signs of artist excellence or anything that makes them stand out as notably better than other nominated films.” said The Medium’s Chris Barsanti.
The Oscars have made headlines before for being unpredictable. In 2022, actor Will Smith slapped Chris Rock on stage after making a G.I. Jane joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith. Another wild Oscar moment was when LaLa Land was mistakenly announced as the Best Picture Winner.
