The cult classic 1990s television show Buffy the Vampire Slayer is returning to the small very soon.
However, Sarah Michelle Gellar will return to reprise her role as Buffy Summers in some capacity, according to Deadline. Whether she’ll lead the show once more remains to be seen, but the odds are she’ll be taking on the role of a mentor.
Sources claim that the reboot series aims to have a pilot order from Hulu. Oscar-winning filmmaker Chloé Zhao (director of Nomadland and Marvel’s Eternals) is a longtime Buffy fan herself and is set to direct the pilot episode with Nora and Lilla Zuckerman (showrunners of Poker Face) on writing duties.
So far, there’s no word on other cast members besides Gellar’s return.
Since the announcement of the news, Gellar shared a statement about the reboot on Instagram, explaining how bringing Buffy back to television has been a three-year-long journey, starting with a “twenty-minute coffee” with Zhao that turned into a “four-hour adventure.”
“While I didn’t agree to anything at that meeting, I did shock myself by agreeing to continue the conservation,” Gellar said. “I have always listened to the fans and heard your desire to revisit “Buffy” and her world, but that was not something I could do unless I was sure we would get it right.”
Gellar’s Buffy co-star David Boreanaz, who played the vampire with a soul and Buffy (Gellar) love interest named Angel in the original show and the spin-off Angel, wrote a heartfelt response to her post and said, “Excited for you and your journey. Enjoy the moments and continue to always give back to the fans. God Speed.”
Another fellow Buffy co-star Juliet Landau, who portrayed sadistic vampire Drusilla in the franchise, also broke her silence about the reboot in an interview with RadioTimes.com. When asked if she’d be interested in reprising her role as Drusilla, she said, “My gosh, yes. It would be so much fun to play, absolutely.”
However, Landau said that the show would benefit from “new talent” and the original cast members. She explained that a mix would be a “key element” in making a successful reboot with fans, according to Inside the Magic.
“I think it is perfect timing for a reboot,” she said.
Buffy creator Joss Whedon was involved in writing the comics. However, he won’t return for the reboot due to abuse allegations made by a number of actors from the original show, including Charisma Carpenter.
In other news revolving the reboot, country icon Dolly Parton is also expected to be an executive producer, having been an uncredited producer for the original through her company Sandollar.
