Hollywood loves a good horror film. The 1997 teen slasher film I Know What You Did Last Summer was a box office and critical hit, with the perfect blend of slasher, gore, who-done-it, and cool-looking teens.
Almost 30 years after the sequel was released, producers are looking to scare audiences once more and are in possible talks with Brandy to return to her role, along with fellow cast mates Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze, Jr. Brandy revealed in an interview that she’d been contacted to reprise her role as Karla Wilson.
“I don’t know how she would come back. I haven’t thought about that yet but I know that she should come back. She should definitely come back,” the R&B singer said.
Fans are supportive on X, fka Twitter. One commented on X, “Brandy is among the pioneering Black scream queens who survived her film. I’m thrilled she’s pushing for a role in the next ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer.’ Her return would evoke nostalgia for fans of the original film and could draw in the audience needed for a successful reboot. Let’s bring her back!”
The film kicked off a franchise with a few sequels to follow including, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, where Brandy played Karla, a character who survived the killer. The I Know What You Did Last Summer franchise also produced a straight-to-DVD third installment in 2006, I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer. This fourth movie is a legacy sequel that will follow the progression of the original but picks up the story later in time and is expected to be released in 2025.
The original movie is based on a 1973 novel by Lois Duncan. The characters are stalked by a mysterious murderer whose weapon of choice is a foot-long metal hook, which earned him the nickname “The Fisherman.”
Brandy became a star with her first self-titled album, released 30 years ago. She has eight studio albums, 43 singles, and 28 soundtrack songs. Of her singles, Sittin’ Up In My Room became a top 10 hit, and later, a duet with singer Monica would bring even more fame. Their song The Boy Is Mine came off the album Never Say Never, and it was certified five times platinum, becoming her biggest success with 9 million copies sold.
She went on to star in the hit sitcom Moesha for six seasons. The show followed the life of a black upper-class family living in the suburbs of Los Angeles and tackled social issues such as teen pregnancy, drug use, and prejudice. It also starred Brandy’s brother Ray J and comedian Bernie Mac. Over the six seasons, it brought in an average of 3 million viewers on the UPN network and garnered two NAACP Image Awards and two SHINE Awards.
Disney came calling in 1997 when Brandy got the title role of Cinderella, and the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to star opposite of Whitney Houston who played The Fairy Godmother. Brandy was the first black actress to portray Cinderella, and although initially not loved by critics, it was applauded for Brandy’s take on the role, making it more of a feminist role rather than traditional. The film was nominated for 7 Emmy Awards and today is recognized for its groundbreaking choice of diverse casting.
Brandy made headlines when she wore the glass slippers and baby blue dress once again in Disney’s Descendants: The Rise Of Red which was released on Disney+ earlier this month. Brandy says of reuniting with her other costar from the original film Paolo Montalban, “We’re so honored, so blessed, so excited. This is such a magical experience to be able to work with Paolo again, to waltz with him, to sing with him-all of it.”
