The Tony Awards conclude their 78th award ceremony this month to once again recognize the goals and achievements of Broadway during the 2024-25 production season.
This ceremony was held in New York City at Radio City Music Hall and streamed on Paramount+. It was hosted by Cynthia Erivo, who starred in popular musicals such as Wicked alongside Ariana Grande and other notable movies like The Color Purple, Harriet, and The Outsider.
Starting the list of 2025 winners, we have Maybe Happy Ending for the best musical, beating out other musicals such as Buena Vista Social Club.
This musical is about two people, Oliver and Claire, who help buy androids and form an excellent bond with them. In the distant future, their story begins when Claire asks Oliver for a charger, which leads them on a road trip where they discover a range of emotions, including love and their limitations. This Broadway musical shows all themes of love and connection through the lives of robots. With its unique premise, this musical captivates audiences.
Nicole Scherzinger also had a successful night, winning Lead Actress for her performance in Sunset Boulevard, a musical about a movie star who refuses to end her stardom. Scherzinger has achieved numerous successes and awards, including a Glamour Award and a Grammy nomination. The actress beats out Audra McDonald and many more.
Since winning a Tony Award, Scherzinger sees her future journey into bigger things. One of those is having a career in Hollywood. The Pussycat Doll played Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard, which was set in the 1950s.
Scherzinger has always been successful, even before receiving the Tony Award. While in the Pussycats, she and her group sold 55 million records worldwide. Now, at this point in her career, she reveals that she wants to start tackling movies.
In an interview with The Sun, she says, “ I would like to do movies and movie musicals. I would like to build my own show; there are roles I would like to create.”
She added, “You never know where your unexpected dream opportunity is going to come from.”
As she accepted her Tony Award, she delved deeper into her feelings and experiences.
“Growing up, I always felt like I didn’t belong, but you all have made me feel like I belong, and I have come home at last,” she said.
As she received her award, she also gave an acceptance speech. “First of all, I just have to thank God for carrying me every step of the way. I give you all the glory,” she said. During her speech, she thanked her fiancé for ‘believing in her when she forgets to believe in herself.’ She also thanked her family, especially her mom, adding that she had her at a young age and gave everything up for her. She mentions her composer, Andrew Lloyd Webber, where she states that, “It has been such an honor to be able to create with you the past 15 years.”
She spoke about how honored she was to be recognized not only by people but also by women.
“I’m so honored to be recognized alongside these exceptional warrior women in this category. I want to thank you all for making this little Hawaiian/ Ukrainian/Filipino girl’s dream come true, so proud to represent,” she said.
After mentioning all of her mentors and family, she finally concluded her speech by giving advice to people in her shoes.
“If there’s anyone out there who feels like they don’t belong or their time has to come, don’t give up. Just keep on giving and giving because the world needs your love and your life more than ever. This is a testament that love always wins. Thank you so much. God bless you.”
Darren Criss also had a notable night after winning Best Lead Actor from the award-winning Maybe Happy Ending. The Glee star beats out James Monroe Iglehart, Jeremy Jordon, and more.
