Amid her accomplishments and the controversy rapper Megan The Stallion has faced, she has been named the host of the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards. She has garnered experience by previously hosting shows such as Saturday Night Live and co-hosting The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
Megan Thee Stallion has been nominated for five awards for this year’s VMAs. Five years ago, her power anthem, Hot Girl Summer, won her first MTV VMA. According to Variety, The VMAs will air on Sept 11 at 8 p.m. ET/PT and will air live from New York’s UBS Arena. The lineup of performers for the show has gradually been rolling out, with Benson Boone, Halsey, Lenny Kravitz, and Lisa of Blackpink.
Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan, GloRilla, Camila Cabello, and Rauw Alejandro had previously been announced to perform on the telecast, as had Katy Perry, who will receive the Video Vanguard Award.
MTV promoted Megan Thee Stallion as the 2024 VMAs host in a joint post shared on Instagram Thursday. In the post’s comment section, many fans expressed their excitement and willingness to tune in now that she is hosting.
“I ain’t watch the VMAs in years. I’m bout to throw a whole watch party,” one commented. Another added, “literally watching just bc she’s hosting.”
Taylor Swift leads the VMA nominees with 10, followed by Post Malone with nine (most of his nominations are for duets with Swift, Fortnight). Carpenter is tied with Ariana Grande and Eminem with six nominations each. Following behind with multiple nods are Megan Thee Stallion and SZA, who have five nominations each, and Lisa, Olivia Rodrigo, and Teddy Swims with four each.
Variety also reported that Megan Thee Stallion had been out on her first headlining tour, including a stop reviewed by Variety at Madison Square Garden, where she was joined by Cardi B and opener GloRilla.
The artist recently performed at a rally for presidential candidate Vice President Kamala Harris. “We about to make history with the first female president, the first Black female president,” she exclaimed at the J rally in Atlanta in July, while performing a medley of Girls in the Hood, Mamushi, Body and Savage. “Let’s get this done hotties. Hotties for Harris!,” Megan Thee Stallion said at the event.
Since gaining fame and popularity, Megan The Stallion has received several awards and award nominations for her musical talents. This includes six BET Awards, five BET Hip Hop Awards, two MTV Video Music Awards, one Billboard Women in Music Award, and three Grammy Awards. She became the second female rapper to win Best New Artist at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards.
Aside from her accolades and professional successes, she has also faced adversity in her personal life. Most notably, the widely publicized incident where she was shot in the foot by another rapper, Tory Lanez, who was convicted of shooting her as they left a party in Los Angeles. Tory Lanez is currently serving a 10-year sentence that was handed down in 2023 for the shooting.
