The smash hit 2000 cheerleading movie “Bring it On” starring Kirsten Dunst and Gabrielle Union has been revered as one of the best teen movies of the new millennium. Memeable, lovable and recitable, the iconographic movie is etched into most of our memories alongside the other “Bring it On” sequels.
Taking on a new form, the franchise will be adding horror to the mix in the upcoming film “Bring it On: Halloween.” In 2022 the Scyfy channel will be releasing the thriller version of “Bring it On,” merging the standard cheerleading rivalry theme with a suspenseful new edge.
“Held down by restrictive rules, an embattled cheerleading squad seeks the freedom of a creepy, closed school gym to practice for regionals, but when members of the squad start to disappear, the cheerleaders must unmask their assailant to save themselves,” according the official movie synopsis. The upcoming film will be the newest “Bring it On” to date and it’s announcement comes a year after Union and Dunst confirmed that there would be a sequel with the original cast.
According to ScreenRant, “Dunst and Union also participated in a virtual Bring it On reunion, along with writer Jessica Bendinger and director Peyton Reed, where they spoke about the film’s impact 20 years later and what the sequel would look like whenever it comes out.”
In a nutshell—for those who haven’t or have refused to see the film—“Bring it On” spotlights the rivalry between fictional high school cheer squads the Rancho Carne Toros and East Compton Clovers. Torrance (Dunst) was the Toros captain, Isis (Union) was the Clovers captain and each captain led their teams to the cheer nationals where they went head-to-head for the champion title. Elements of this most likely will be present in the Halloween themed “Bring it On.”
Although there isn’t any news on the specifics of “Bring it On: Halloween,” what is known is that the new film will be a slasher rather than a comedy. The franchise branching off into a new genre will be interesting to see, especially if it includes the original cast. As a fellow “Bring it On” stan I am anxious to see the new spinoff, and will be counting down to the spooky season!
