Since late 2025, social media has been booming about the long-term effects of doomscrolling, leading to the term “brain rot” and how it’s affecting users cognitively.
People can’t stop talking about it. It has been scientifically proven that scrolling through TikTok’s for you page or Instagram’s reels feed has been causing mental health issues.
The biggest example was when famous YouTuber and streamer Kai Cenat received hate for reading various novels that came off to his fans as “performative.”
And the worst case yet, the literacy crisis. Currently 54% of most adults have a literacy reading level younger than a sixth grader. Terrifying!
As social media is updating viewers, promoting negativity, positivity, and products, these short-term videos are creating additional challenges. This is leading to emotional desensitization, cognitive overload, and a deterioration of self-image.
People are questioning how to avoid brain rot and recover before it’s too late. Here are three activities to do to get your mind sharp again.
Read a good book
Stop by your local bookstore to read something outside of your norm. It may be difficult, but it takes time to jump back from digital scrolling into visually seeing something more physical. Or if buying books may be too expensive, visit your local library!
Play board games
Maybe not something like Monopoly or Checkers, but playing new physical games helps the brain from doomscrolling after effects.
Limit the constant stimulation
The biggest essential understanding of phone addiction is the constant need to be entertained. Take the time to remain in silence. Go outside (without listening to music) for a walk, hit the gym, or even visit a mall.
