The Up & Up brand is in hot water in the baby world due to concerns about life-threatening bacteria found in its baby wipes.
This comes after the Food and Drug Administration announced a recall of the Fresh Cucumber-scented baby wipes on Friday, June 5. These wipes were sold in Target stores and online, and the FDA found they contain Burkholderia gladioli bacteria, which can cause serious side effects, including sepsis and other life-threatening infections.
Customers who have bought these baby wipes are entitled to refunds and are asked to immediately stop use. The brand Up & Up has been a staple for Target for many years, they are creating many products for Target, ranging from cleaning supplies to school supplies and have faced little to no problem. This was the case until customers complained of “discoloration” in the baby wipes which then prompted an investigation. These products were sold in Target stores and online, according to the press release from the FDA.
In the press release, the FDA identified Burkholderia complex and Burkholderia gladioli bacteria in the product samples that “may result in serious in life-threatening infections.”
According to the Center for Disease Control, “B. cepacia germs can be resistant to antibiotics making them difficult to treat,”
Another reason the product was recalled was due to the bacteria’s higher threat to young children with compromised immune systems, making them more susceptible to infection. Not only does it pose a threat to children. It also poses a threat to other people with compromised immune systems, which is “ more likely to spread into the bloodstream, potentially leading to life-threatening sepsis or pneumonia,” according to the FDA.
These fragrance-free baby wipes were packaged in plastic pouches containing sets of 20, 72, or 100 wipes, which had expiration dates between May 10 and November 5, 2028. These wipes were also manufactured between November 7, 2025, and May 5.
The Up & Up’s Fresh Cucumbers sensitive baby wipes were packaged in plastic pouches, having 72 or 100 wipes with a marked expiration date of June 29 and June 30, 2028, with these wipes being manufactured between December 29 and December 30, 2025.
Customers who bought these products can either return them to any Target location for a full refund, or they are recommended to immediately stop use.
