A musical about the famous superstar group TLC will take the stage next summer.
It will feature some of the group’s hit songs. TLC is an all-girl group that makes R&B music, such as No Scrubs and Waterfalls.
The official world premiere will start next summer in Washington, D.C., at Arena Stage’s Kreeger. The Broadway show will be called CrazySexyCool — The Musical.
The musical will run from June 12 to August 9 to celebrate the company’s 75th anniversary. The arena will have nine productions, including a new adaption of Damn Yankees, which Will Power and Doug Wright will adapt. Other productions include Pal Joey, Inherit the Wind, A Good to Me Not You with My Joy is Heavy to end everything off.
The musical will tell the story of Tionne ‘T-Boz’ Watkins, Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, and Rozonda “Chili” Thomas. This musical group was popular in the 1990s, with multiple charting singles.
They’re also known for having great looks and dance moves that go well with their anthems and sounds. According to Broadway, the all-girl group is among the most successful female groups ever. Kwane Kwei-Armah wrote and directed One Love: The Bob Marley Musical.
“TLC is synonymous with rebellion — using their art to challenge, subvert and entertain,” Kwei-Armah said. “Why a musical? Why now? Their lives need to be sung. It’s about that time!”
Kwei-Armah’s other accomplishments included acting and being the artistic director of Young Vic in London.
The person behind the Broadway choreography is Chloe O. Davis, the dance captain for Hell’s Kitchen. Another recent accomplishment she’s done was being the associate choreographer for Gypsy.
“Bringing this story to the stage is a dream come true,” said Watkins in a statement, “We have performed in a lot of different venues all over the world throughout our career, but bringing our story and music to the theater is a totally new and exciting challenge.”
“We have some of the best people in the business working on this project,” said Thomas. “Audiences will get to hear our story — mostly fact with a sprinkle of fiction — told in our own way, and of course, it’s set to all your favorite hits!”
The musical takes place around 1994 when the group recently released their double platinum album, which spawned four top-ten singles. This album also performed well and ended up winning a Grammy for Best R&B Album and Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals for its single Creep.
The musical focuses on TLC’s life with a little bit of a twist. It features their sisterhood with a powerhouse of a cast, high-paced choreography, and very popular charging hits. This musical dives into scandals, creativity, and tragedies. It gives the audience a preview of their lives, trials, tribulations, and love.
