Rapper Snoop Dogg has never been one to buckle under the pressures of what social media thinks, and he’s not starting now.
In an Instagram post from this past weekend, Snoop stood up for himself and his choices saying, “For all the hate, I’m going to answer with love. I love too much. Get your life right, stop worrying about mine. I’m cool. I’m together. Still a Black man. Still 100 percent Black. All out ’til you ball out or ’til you fall out.”
He didn’t specify where the hate is coming from, but it may be related to his association with his performance at President Donald Trump‘s Inauguration celebration, the Crypto Ball.
In an Instagram video, Snoop is seen driving through a rare rainy Sunday in Los Angeles. He’s cruising along listening to songs from the 1950s and beyond, occasionally blowing smoke towards the camera. He remained unbothered as the comments poured in, “Zero hate, just disappointed.” Another upset fan, “Snoop is now MAGA. This was fun. Unfollow and BLOCK.”
Snoop performed at the Crypto Ball before the ceremony in celebration of the newly elected President. He entertained the crowd with a bit of DJ skills, rapping along to his hit Drop It Like It’s Hot. Other artists like country singers Jason Aldean and Billy Ray Cyrus as well as rapper Nelly all performed at the celebration.
Nelly, too, faced a bit of backlash for his involvement, but he said in an interview, “It’s not about a campaign, this is not a campaign trail. This is not anything that, um, I feel like I’m influencing people to the way or how they feel, but is more about the respect and the honor of being invited for what I like to call the greatest country on the planet.”
Still, he’s not letting it get to him. “You’re gonna deal with hate when you get to the top, no matter who you are. Me, personally, I answer it with success and love. That’s my answer to hate and negativity that comes my way, cause it’s the strongest force that can beat it,” Snoop said in the clip.
It seems Snoop’s fans and Nelly’s alike, expressed the same outrage at their participation. Snoop’s social media following took a dip after the performance, his Instagram page losing half a million followers, and his X account now has some 20,000 fewer followers. Snoop’s fans seem to be confused at the drastic change from his opinion on Trump during his first run in office since he openly mocked him in his 2017 Lavender music video.
Trump’s actions in January of 2021 may have swayed Snoop’s thinking. Trump and his office pardoned Death Row co-founder, Michael Harris who, at the time, was three decades into a sentence for attempted murder and cocaine trafficking. Said Snoop of Harris’ release, “I love what they did.”
