Rap superstar Kendrick Lamar surprised everyone by dropping a new album on Friday. The album, GNX, features 12 new songs, some of which include a collaboration with singers Deyra Barrera and SZA. He teased the album on his YouTube page with a one-minute video and then released it 30 minutes later. However, the songs do not mention his very public feud with Drake.
GNX is already gaining critics’ and fans’ praise just four days after its release. His sixth studio album earned an 89 out of 100 on Metacritic, and fans on X, formerly Twitter, are loving what they’re hearing: “Casually breaking the internet.” Says another fan, “An entire album in a tweet? A GOAT move.”
Variety uses the word “masterpiece” when describing the production and writing on GNX. “Kendrick Lamar is at his most compelling, reaffirming his status as the most dynamic spitter the world has to offer.” Producers such as Sounwave and Jack Antonoff put their touches on the tracks, the latter having famously worked with Taylor Swift on seven of her albums including the Grammy-award winning 1989.
They applaud the songs’ sounds and production value and predict that some of the tracks, including Squabble Up, will make it to the top of the charts. Lamar is having a banner year and remains a draw for the public’s interest. His aforementioned feud with Drake has made headlines for over a decade, as the two rap superstars first began their relationship as a friendly one, even collaborating on each other’s songs.
Eventually evolving into a personal as well as lyrical battle, the two dropped diss tracks on their albums. But none had garnered more attention than Lamar’s Not Like Us in which he calls out Drake for his alleged pedophilia and sexual misconduct accusations. Released in May of this year, the track received five Grammy nominations and broke records on Spotify.
The NFL announced in September that Lamar would take the stage for their Super Bowl Halftime Show. Some fans pushed back claiming that Lamar was unworthy of the honor and that fellow rapper Lil’ Wayne should have been asked to perform. The controversy must have stuck with Lamar as he even addressed it in the song, Wacced Out Murals. He raps, “Got the Super Bowl an Nas the only one congratulate me, all these (expletive) agitated I’m just glad it’s on they faces.”
