October brings the notion of cooler days, falling leaves and sweater weather. With this, you may be looking to your closet for inspiration, only to find old sweatshirts and worn out sneakers. Fall is typically a time of the year where fashion lovers and even those on the periphery of fashion, look to update their look. Our list includes 15 of the trending fashion and makeup looks that you can try on for size this season as suggested by Glamour and Vogue.
Boho Trend
Taking the lead in fashion this season is the Boho trend. It’s back for a third time around having peaked in the 1970s and again in the early 2000s. The trend is an easy, breezy look, with crochet, fringe and loose fabrics and textures. The fabrics such as denim and suede dominate the look this fall.
Denim on Denim
Denim on denim. Sure, we’ve seen this look in the old hey-day of country music stars and even pop icons Britney Spears and then-boyfriend Justin Timberlake made headlines with their all-denim looks at the 2001 American Music Awards. The “Canadian Tuxedo” phrase was born in 1951 when singer Bing Crosby wore jeans with a denim jacket. Fashion trends would have us believe that it’s a corny look, but history repeats itself and the double denim makes a comeback time and time again. This fall, the all-denim look is focused on any shade of blue, with western style shirts and maxi length skirts taking the lead.
Leopard Print
Leopard prints never seem to go out of style, and the bold pattern looks great in a mini skirt but also shows up well in your favorite pair of sneakers. Pair them with jeans and you’ve brought the trendy look into your every day.
Loafers
Loafers are the sensible way to be on trend. These aren’t your mom’s penny loafers with a chunky sole that not only gives height but also more of a statement look in an otherwise basic shoe.
Mary Jane Shoes
On the same topic of shoes, flats are a favorite this fall. Mary-Janes are a feminine look and transfer well from work-wear to casual weekend outfits. The strap across the top of your foot brings you back to your school days uniforms. Bold colors and our number 6 on the list, studs help to spruce up the shoe trend.
Stud Earrings
Continuing with studs: once a look for your favorite rock band from the 1980s, studs are popular way to give edge to your outfit. The small silver knobs can decorate much including your boots, purses and jackets.
Riding Boots
The classic tall riding boot is in style this fall. An equestrian look oozes class and poise and thankfully, you don’t need to be able to ride a horse in order to pull off this trend. The boot typically goes up to the bottom of your knee, with leather being the fabric of choice for a quality product. Buckles also tend to add to the the boot’s overall look.
Plaid Patterns
Plaid patterns are a trend this fall, but less school-girl vibes and more long skirts and layers of jackets and sweaters.
(Faux) Fur
Fur is on trend and it’s purpose is two-fold: it’s beautiful to look at while also keeping you warm in the cooler months ahead. Faux fur is definitely the choice when you’re purchasing as consumers and PETA alike drew a line in the sand when it came to the unethical and inhumane process of cultivating the fur. PETA, People For the Ethical Treatment of Animals, has very famously worked with Cindy Crawford and Pamela Anderson in the fight against animal cruelty. Faux fur has advanced greatly over the years and the quality as well as the visual look.
Neckties
Once reserved for the men, women are borrowing a look from the opposite sex. Neckties are taking over the runways. You can of course pair one with a classic button-down shirt, but also branch out and wear one with a sweater and jeans.
Dark Burgandy Make-Up
In the makeup department, you’ll need something bold to go with your new wardrobe. The fall color palette leans towards dark burgundy colors. Think wine, mahogany, and red. Look to the falling leaves for your inspiration.
Light Eye Shadow
Similarly, other bold colors such as blue and green are gaining attention. Steering away from the sheer, barely-there look of summertime, a bright blue looks great as a fresh manicure or green eyeshadow to bring out your best feature. Universal Studios upcoming movie, Wicked, is bringing no shortage of merchandise, with star Ariana Grande’s makeup line REM Beauty releasing a whole line of makeup. The line gives nod to the film with an emphasis on the green witch and Grande’s character who is decked out in pink.
Earth Tones
If bold isn’t for you, you’re in luck. Keep it muted with earth tones this season. All shades of brown, tan and grey are an easy way to wear the makeup you like but without going too intense. Should you like to turn up the intensity, it’s easy to do with a brown lipstick or smokey eye.
Cream-Based Highlighter
Highlighter is back and ready to put your face in the forefront. A cream-based highlighter is easy to blend and gives a flushed look.
No Makeup, Makeup
No makeup, makeup. If you’re not feeling any of the above trends, you can try out this one final trend of the no makeup look. Focus on your skin care with a tinted moisturizer, a bit of a duo blush-and-bronzer in one and finish the look with a swipe of lip balm. You’re ready and fresh-faced for the fall.
Glamour, a fashion staple since 1939, has always been a source of guidance for women. Initially beginning as a magazine focused on what is now “Old Hollywood”, it pivoted towards fashion, beauty, health and even psychology in the mid 1940s. Today, it has an online presence as it printed its final physical issue in 2019 after a declining sales.
As with many of its competitors, and as the interests of women morphed, Glamour and other magazines began to shift their focus on not only fashion and beauty but current-day concerns such as women’s rights, political issues and crowning a “Woman of the Year” in Serena Williams.
Vogue began over 130 years ago as a fashion magazine. Eventually acquired by Conde Nast, Vogue has been aptly named as “high fashion’s bible” by The New York Times. With articles on not only fashion, but current issues, Vogue has always set the standard for fashion as well as literally making headlines. Vogue has put men on their covers on 10 different occasions, a place typically held for women.
The men included were LeBron James, George Clooney and Kanye West. The cover with Kanye was also groundbreaking in that it also featured his then-wife Kim Kardashian, making their cover the first with an interracial couple in 2014. Other notables include Kamala Harris, who in 2021 appeared on the cover as the first Vice President. In 1992, Vogue featured 10 supermodels from the peak of 90s high fashion including Cindy Crawford and Naomi Campbell.
Both Glamour and Vogue are part of the Conde Nast Collection, which also umbrellas over 20 other brands including Allure and GQ.
