After a stunning four-year playing Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Scarlett Johansson sets more records to become the global box office’s highest-grossing lead actor, minus inflation adjustment.
According to The Numbers, Johansson now has a lifetime gross of 14.8 billion in films where she has the lead role or lead ensemble. Over half of which comes from the four Avengers movies and Captain America: Civil War, where she played Black Widow.
This comes after her recent project, Jurassic World: Rebirth. With this new project, she surpasses her former MCU co-workers, Robert Downey Jr., and Samuel L. Jackson.
In this film, Johansson takes over from Chris Pratt as the new lead of the Jurassic Park series. She plays an ex-military operative, Zora Bennett, on a mission to one of the last remaining islands where dinosaurs still live.
“I was like, show me the sets! I want to participate!” Johansson said. “I’ve been trying to get into this franchise in any way possible for over 10 years. I’m like, I’ll die in the first five minutes, I can get eaten by whatever! I’ll do the craft service. I’ll do anything for it.” she told Comicbook.com.
Within the first week of its release, the film earned $318 million, the second highest of the year behind Chinese film Ne Zha 2.
Of the top five grossing lead actors, Tom Hanks is the only one who wasn’t part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Other Marvel actors who were among the top five besides Downey Jr. and Jackson were Chris Pratt, who portrayed Star-Lord. Before Johannson, Jackson held the record with a whopping $14.6 billion with Pixar’s two Incredibles movies.
Downey Jr. had the third-highest-grossing movie roles, with $14.2 billion in earnings from movie roles, $11.8 billion of which came from nine Marvel movies. He recently won an award for Best Supporting Actor in the film Oppenheimer.
However, despite being third, Downey, Jr. still has the chance to become the highest-grossing actor in December 2026 when he portrays Dr. Doom in Avengers: Doomsday. It might be a challenge for Downey Jr. if there’s an off chance that Scarlett Johansson could reprise her role as Black Widow in the 2027 Avengers: Secret Wars, despite Johansson’s stating otherwise.
