The third installment of the Dune series will start production this summer.
This movie series is an adaptation of Frank Herbets’s sequel model, Dune Messiah, and with the third installment, Paul Atreides will finally conclude. The novel follows the character Paul “Muad Dib” Atreides, ruling as an Emperor for over 12 years.
Because he accepted the role of messiah to Fremen, a jihad was released and conquered most of the universe. Unfortunately for Atreides, he’s too powerless to stop it.
In Dune: Part Two, Paul Atriedes unites with Fremen to seek revenge against conspirators who destroyed his family. In the film, Atriedes has a choice: either the fate of the universe or the love of his life.
Despite no official set date, the movie has been in pre-production for a while. According to multiple sources, production for Dune 3 starts in June because of key elements, such as talent availability and time for everything to fall into place. Currently, Zendaya, a movie lead, is gearing up to start other projects, such as The Odyssey and the highly anticipated return of the series Euphoria.
Zendaya and Timothee Chalamet were the main leads in Dune: Part Two. The sequel made over $700 million at the box office. Both series installments, Dune and Dune: Part Two, earned Best Picture Oscar nominations.
There’s no word on where the movie will be shot. In February 2024, Dune director Denis Villeneuve mentioned that he was in no hurry to make the adaption, stating that he wanted to take a breather before starting up production again. The movie locations for the last two installments were shot in Origo, Hungary, Jordon, and Abu Dhabi. According to Deadline in December 2026, the studio plans to hold a slot for Denis Villeneuve Event Film.
As the series concludes, viewers have pointed out some key differences between the film medium and the novel. While the film is mainly accurate, one key difference is removing one character, Harah. Harah was one of the wives of Paul Atredies in Dune and was considered an essential part of Paul’s life. With the third movie coming up, Harah has not been mentioned.
Initially, Molly Wryn was set to play Harah and even had a couple of scenes filmed, but the scenes were ultimately cut from the final version. Some viewers speculate that Harah can still appear in the third installment.
