Thanksgiving meals are full of traditional dishes and this year is no different. In a recent poll from YouGov, Americans are nothing if not predictable when it comes to their holiday menu.
Coming in with the largest percentage of those indulging in turkey is a whopping 67%. Following closely behind turkey is mashed potatoes at 56% of us expecting the dish on our table.
Thanksgiving is heavy with the carbs and certainly bread and stuffing, with or without gravy, and pie all landed at about 55% of Americans making room on their plates. Interestingly enough, Americans will probably pass on the greens as brussels sprouts only earned the liking of 10% of us choosing the green cabbages as a side dish.
Somewhat surprisingly low, was the poll results of those who intended to either watch a sport on Thanksgiving Day or enjoy the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, with each of the events coming in at 35% and 19%, respectively.
Perhaps just as traditional as the turkey on your table, is the aforementioned Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Heading into their 98th year, the parade is an American staple at the end of every November. The floats make their way from the Upper West Side to Herald Square, ending at Macy’s. The parade originated in 1924, only missing two years for World War II. The Covid-19 pandemic didn’t completely cancel the parade, but did force it to downsize greatly. This year 22 balloons including Minnie Mouse and Spider-Man and 34 floats will make up the parade. Singer Jennifer Hudson, Rapper T-Pain and singer Chloe are some of the performers expected to grace the floats of the parade. The event kicks off on Thursday morning at 8:30 EST on NBC.
Nearly 90% of Americans will celebrate Thanksgiving, which equates to 46 million turkeys being consumed. Butterball’s website offers last minute guidance for your meal planning. If you find yourself panicked on Wednesday night, don’t stress. There are a few options of restaurants and grocers who are offering to do the tough work for you while you enjoy the parade.
