Blake Lively is facing the heat, once again, from the public eye after using a transphobic slur. Finding an interview from 2012, a user on X, formerly Twitter, posted a photo from Blake Lively’s interview with Elle magazine.
The photo is an image from the magazine’s printed interview with a small picture of Blake Lively with the quote in color font stating, “I hope to have a few girls one day. If not girls, they’d better be trannies. Because I have some amazing shoes, bags, and stories that need to be appreciated.”
In true internet fashion, it does not seem to forget. In 2009, Blake Lively gave an interview to Allure magazine, once again quoted as using the word “tranny.” Blake Lively, talking about her stature, saying she “feels like a tranny a lot of the time.” She continues, “I’m…large? They put me in 6-inch heels, and I tower over every man. I’ve got this long hair and lots of clothes and makeup on. I just feel really big a lot of the time, and I’m surrounded by a lot of tiny people. I feel like a man sometimes.”
Opinions flying on X, “I’m kinda her biggest critic/hater right now but I must say that the word ‘tranny’ wasn’t seen as derogatory back in those days. It was just short for transexual.” Another, “Oh god, you super sensitive people make me laugh. This was said 12 years ago.”
Others aren’t interested in letting this slide, “She deserves the hate she is getting right now. People get so FULL of themselves. Promoting haircare line/alcohol during interviews about domestic violence. Such narcissist. She better call TAYLOR SWIFT to get her out of this! If she can get her away from the white trash beau!”
Blake Lively can’t seem to keep her name out of print, as much negative press has recently been reported on her. The abovementioned X user’s comment mirrors the negative press surrounding her new movie It Ends With Us. In interviews promoting the film, she is taking the opportunity to also promote her beverage line Betty Buzz, which offers sparkling sodas and mixers to alcoholic beverages all made with natural ingredients. Additionally, she has been pushing her haircare line, Blake Brown.
Other incidents have fans cringing is the time where she was gifted a homemade bracelet from a fan, and refused to wear it saying “Oh my gosh, thank you so much. That’s so sweet. I’m gonna put it here because it doesn’t go with my outfit but I will wear it later.”
Another press interview shoow Blake Lively with her co-stars Jenny Slate and Isabela Ferrer discussing the film with the author of the book Colleen Hoover. It Ends With Us is based on Hoover’s book of the same name and depicts the main character, played by Blake Lively, caught in an abusive relationship. During an interview with the four women, fans thought it was a bit strange that there was no mention of the messaging of the film, or even a mention of domestic violence. Instead, they chatted about zodiac signs and dream jobs.
Also, on her TikTok account, she was promoting the movie as if it were a campy, feel-good comedy, “grab your friends, wear your florals, and head out to see it.” Fans wondered if she fully understood the severity of the film’s message. One X user wrote, “He [Justin Baldoni] has responded to it with sensitivity and compassion, whereas she is using it for self promotion. If she is touched by the content, she isn’t showing it.” On the movie’s TikTok account, nearly all recent posts have some version of florals in them.
Additionally, the interview with Jake Hamilton leaves fans with a bad taste in their mouths after she seemed to gloss over the question of whether viewers may want to talk to her about their experiences with domestic violence. Instead of a thoughtful answer, she giggles, “Like people asking for my address or my phone number? Or like my location-share, I could just location-share you.” She ends the awkward statement with a laugh.
Fans are also picking up minute hints of a real-life feud between the stars, noticing how the two choose to answer questions about the other. While interviewing with Today, Justin Baldoni focused on the challenges of making a film.
“Every movie is a miracle. And then, of course, you’re navigating complex personalities and trying to get everybody on the same page with the same vision,” Justin Baldoni said. “And mistakes are always made, and then you figure out how to move past them.”
Blake Lively’s awkward behavior in interviews can be traced back to 2016. A resurfaced interview with journalist Kjersti Fla, Blake Lively behaved what some considered as rude. Kjersti Fla uploaded the interview on her YouTube account, aptly-titling the clip, “The Blake Lively interview that made me want to quit my job.” In the video she attempted to interview the blonde star with her costar Parker Posey about their film Cafe Society.
Kjersti Flaa can be seen painfully watching on after she simply congratulated the Gossip Girl alum on her quite-visible pregnancy bump. She parrots back, her response oozing with snark, “Congrats on your little bump.” It is quite obvious that Flaa is not pregnant.
Next, the two actresses take off on a transparent attempt at sarcasm as they answer Flaa’s question about the clothing worn in the period-piece movie. “Everyone wants to talk about the clothes, but I wonder if they would ask the men about the clothes.”This interview did not do Blake Lively any favors in the public eye.
In another interview for that same movie, Lively was asked about working with the director, Woody Allen. Accused and cleared of sexual assault by his adopted daughter, Lively seemingly brushed off the allegations by saying, “I could only know my experience. And my experience with Woody is that he’s empowering to women.”
Still, drama aside, the film did well with an impressive $100 million opening weekend globally, surpassing all expectations. It came in second behind Blake Lively’s husband Ryan Reynold’s film Deadpool & Wolverine, which brought in over $1 billion, making it the biggest R-rated film ever.
