Former President Donald Trump stirs even more controversy as the nation barrels down to the November 2024 Presidential Election.
Trump is no stranger to speaking his mind, as evidenced by his criticism of Fulton County District Attorney Fanni Willis’s handling of the YSL RICO case involving Atlanta rapper Young Thug.
Trump is now accusing Willis’ prosecution of “unfair” treatment of Young Thug, whose real name is Jeffrey Lamar Williams, during his trial hearings. During Trump’s recent appearance on a live stream with social media personality Adin Ross, he discussed Willis and Young Thug.
“So, um, I know Fani Willis treated you very unfairly. I have a friend who’s currently being treated unfairly by her. He’s a rapper named Young Thug,” Trump said.
The Republican presidential nominee praised Young Thug as being a “patriot” in his sit-down with Ross, doubling down on his stance that the Southern rhymer wasn’t being fairly treated in his case.
“So, I’ve heard about him, and I’ve heard he’s being treated very unfairly by [DA Willis], and I would tell her she’s gotta treat these patriots that are being all—it’s terrible. They’re going after them…He’s gotta be treated fairly,” the politician said.
Young Thug faces nine charges that could send him to prison for five to twenty years for conspiracy to violate The Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO). Other charges the rapper, a known member of the YSL street crew, faces include possession of drugs and weapons participation in street gang activity.
According to Fox 5, “Fulton County Superior Court Judge Paige Whitaker has given prosecutors in the YSL trial an ultimatum to turn over all the evidence against rapper Young Thug, whose legal name is Jeffery Williams, and his associates to defense attorneys by the end of the week or face a mistrial.”
Ironically, last year, Trump was indicted for the same RICO charges that Young Thug currently faces.
According to Rolling Stone, this trial is the longest criminal trial in Georgia’s history. It has been plagued by endless problems, including the recusal of not one but two judges in charge of the case. The trial has lasted a grueling eighteen months and has taken several twists and turns in an attempt to resolve the case for the rapper allegedly running a notorious street gang under the guise of a record label.
At a recent rally held in Atlanta, Trump began his attacks on Willis by eluding to her alleged romantic relationship with Nathan Wade, the prosecutor she hired to help prosecute Trump’s RICO conspiracy charges that involved his attempt to overturn the 2020 Presidential Election. “Mr. and Mrs. Wade right,” is what he referred to Willis and Wade as.
In March, Willis or Wade were sanctioned to resign from the case; otherwise, it could be dismissed in Trump’s favor. Wade resigned and said, “He was doing so in the interest of democracy.”
Young Thug has been nominated for six Grammy Awards but has only won one for his song This America, which won Song of The Year in 2019.
