Vice President Kamala Harris has officially named her running mate in the battle for the presidential office this November.
Announced officially on Tuesday morning, the Harris campaign introduced Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, who has served his state since 2018 and won re-election in 2022. The two politicians will hit the road this week, visiting seven battleground states, starting tonight in Pennsylvania, to focus on who is working to “move the country forward.” They will highlight the fact that the 60-year-old Walz is a gun owner who believes “Congress must do more to tackle gun violence in our communities.”
“I am proud to announce that I’ve asked @Tim_Walz to be my running mate. As a governor, a coach, a teacher, and a veteran, he’s delivered for working families like his. It’s great to have him on the team,” Harris endorsed in a post on X, formerly Twitter.
During his tenure as Governor, Walz gained attention by approving forward-thinking ideals such as paid family leave, universal school meals, state codification of abortion rights, and gun control background checks. Sources say the Harris campaign is also leaning into Walz’s Midwestern appeal, stating, “He has a deep connection to rural Americans.”
Walz made headlines for calling Donald Trump and his running mate, JD Vance, called them “weird.” The Harris team thinks that is a descriptor that will stick against their opponents. In the now-viral insult heard during his interview on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, Walz said, “We do not like what has happened, when you can’t even go to Thanksgiving dinner with your uncle because you end up in some weird fight that is unnecessary. It’s true: These guys are just weird.”
Walz has also spoken about what Democrats can do to gain traction in the deep-red areas.
In a recent CNN appearance, Walz defended Harris against Trump’s claims that she is an “ultra-liberal,” saying, “[Trump’s] going to mispronounce names, to try and make the case…where you see the policies that Harris was a part of making…the quality of life is higher.”
Posting on X this morning, Walz acknowledges his endorsement, “It is the honor of a lifetime to join Kamala Harris in this campaign. I’m all in.”
Celebrities who have shared their support for Walz on X include actress Julianne Moore, who wrote: “This is such exciting news!”
Jamie Lee Curtis showed her support on Instagram, sharing a picture of the presidential hopefuls, saying “Let’s go America!” Finally, Kellyanne Conway, Trump’s 2016 campaign manager shared her thoughts on X, “Tim Walz? What a relief.”
Trump’s VP pick JD Vance is also scheduled to visit the battleground states this week as well, with stops in Michigan, Wisconsin, North Carolina, and Georgia before heading west to Arizona and Nevada later this week.
