Lauryn Hill Opens Up About Her Tour With The Fugees Tour Being Canceled

About 72 hours before their scheduled performance, iconic hip-hop superstar group the Fugees, which includes lead singer and solo superstar Lauryn Hill, canceled their upcoming United States tour.

Fans with tickets to their respective shows received an email late Tuesday night simply saying, “Your event has been canceled. A refund will be on its way to your account soon.” Tampa Bay, Florida, was expected to be the first city to host The Miseducation Anniversary Tour (Hill’s debut solo album is titled The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill), which boasted 18 U.S. dates, including stops in Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Dallas, and Houston.

The group is still scheduled to head overseas for their Europe dates beginning in October, with stops in London and Paris, as well as the recently added new shows in Berlin, Dublin, and Stockholm, amongst others.

Fans on X, formerly Twitter, don’t seem surprised it seems, “I knew that Fugees’ tour was never happening.” Another X user, “I knew better not to get ticket to that Fugees’ tour.”

This is not the first time the group has had to cancel unceremoniously on their adoring fans. The group reunited in 2021 but only played one concert due to “pandemic-related difficulties.” They attempted another time in 2023, but were sidelined after Hill said she suffered “serious vocal strain.”

Hill took to Instagram to speak on the canceled U.S. Tour.

“With difficulty, the decision was made to pull down our upcoming North American tour dates,” Hill wrote in a statement on Instagram. “The shows in the UK ARE MOVING FORWARD as planned.”

She went on to explain why she decided it was best not to perform in America.

“Last year, I faced an injury that necessitated the rescheduling of some of my shows,” Hill revealed in her Instagram post. “Regrettably, some media outlet’s [sic] penchant for sensationalism and clickbait headlines have seemingly created a narrative that has affected ticket sales for the North American portion of the tour. The trust and faith I have in my intentions and my commitment to my art seem to have been overshadowed by this unfortunate portrayal.”

She added: “The audiences in the UK and Europe not only haven’t seen the Miseducation Anniversary performance yet, they also haven’t see the Fugees perform together in over over 25 years! Performing for my fans, is a profound exchange of energy and emotion that excites me every time. Every show is a piece of my expression and testament to our connection and shared love of music. I can assure you that no one is more disappointed about not being able to perform than I am.”

Hill made sure to let her fans know how “grateful” she was to those who continuously supported her.

“Know that I am not only grateful for those who appreciate and support my art, but that I FIGHT and push through all kinds of resistance to put together experiences that mean something for all of us. I love being able to bring these performances to you!,” she expressed.

“For our fans in North America, when these unforeseen circumstances are resolved, we’ll be back in full force… With Love, Respect and Honesty, MLH,” she concluded.

Hill leads the group along with Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel. The trio skyrocketed to fame when their second studio album, The Score, peaked at number one on the US Billboard 200 in 1996. With major hits like Ready Or Not and Killing Me Softly With His Song, The Fugees cemented their place as icons in hip hop and rap music, even pop culture.

The group was awarded two Grammy wins for Best Rap Album for The Score and Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group. Hill has her own collection of Grammys, with 8 wins under her belt and an impressive 19 nominations. Hill made history as the first Black woman to win five or more awards in a single night on the Grammy stage in 1998; also credited with The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill album as the first hip hop album to win Album Of The Year. The album featured the hit Doo Wop (That Thing), which helped in its massive success.
