Ayra Starr
Grammy nominee Ayra Starr will star in her own documentary which details her life and success. Premiering Thursday, August 1, fans of Starr can stream the documentary called Dare To Dream on Amazon Music’s YouTube channel and app.
Starr, whose birth name is Oyinkansola Aderibigbe, is a global Afrobeats performer and began her career in her Lagos, Nigeria, after she signed to Don Jazzy’s iconic Mavin label. Born in Cotonou, Starr made mainstream fame in 2021 with her hit song Away which spent 2 weeks at number 4 on Nigeria’s TurnTable Top 50 chart and peaked at number 17 on the Billboard Top Triller Global chart. Her first full-length album was released later that year. The 22-year-old singer is showcased in the documentary which is directed and produced by Homecoming and gives fans a closer look into her music journey.
Amazon Prime has invested over 2 million dollars in producing the documentary which features her sold-out shows in London as well as Starr attending the 2024 Grammy Awards and learning of her first nomination for best African music performance of her 2022 single Rush. With the success of that single, Starr became the youngest African female artist to surpass 100 million views on a single video on YouTube, accomplishing that feat in 5 months.
Speaking at the premiere of the film, Starr tells the audience, “I’ve always wanted to…inspire African girls all over the world, Black girls, girls in general to keep going and do what they believe and were born to do.” Starr has hopes of one day turning to acting looking for a role where she can play in a high school movie, similar to Euphoria.
“I’m not a mean girl at all, but I grew up watching Sharpay Evans [in High School Musical], just like the mean girl that’s never mean. They’re just real. You know when women know what they want, I want to be that woman,” she said.
In the coming weeks, you can find Dare To Dream on Prime Video.
