Daniel Radcliffe, who is best known for his role as Harry Potter in the character’s self-titled film series Harry Potter, adds a new trophy to his award collection.
At the 2024 Tony Awards, the actor won the award for best performance by a featured actor in a musical for his role as Charley Kringas in Merrily We Roll Along. On top of winning a Tony with his first nomination, this also serves as a great Father’s Day gift since the awards ceremony happened on the holiday this year. Radcliffe welcomed a child in April 2023 with his longtime girlfriend Erin Darke.
In his acceptance speech, he shouted out his girlfriend, child, and parents, stating, “My mum and dad are here somewhere – happy Father’s Day, Dad, I love you both so much.”
He continued, “Thank you for playing Sondheim in the car and just, you know, loving me…and my love Erin — you and our son are the best thing that has ever happened to me. I love you so much, thank you so much. Thank you everybody.”
Radcliffe also took time out of his speech to highlight the efforts of his fellow cast members.
“Thank you so much to our cast, everybody on that stage, it is an honor to be on that stage with you every single night. I will miss it so much…speaking of missing things — Jonathan [Groff], Lindsay [Mendez], I will miss you so much,” the former child star thanked.
“I don’t have to act in this show, I just have to look at you and feel everything I want to feel,” he said. “I will never have it this good again.”
Later, when speaking to reporters, Radcliffe was very candid about his career and his gratitude for the opportunities he’s been given with and after Harry Potter.
“When I finished [‘Harry Potter’] I had no idea what my career would be. I’d already started doing some stage stuff, but I didn’t know what the future held at all” he said.
“To have had the last year playing Weird Al and also Merrily We Roll Along, it’s been awesome.” He finished with, “Playing one character for a very long time builds up an anxiety, like, Do as many things as you possibly can. So yeah, I’m doing that right now.”
On X, formerly Twitter, many praised Radcliffe for winning such a major award.
“Daniel Radcliffe getting the recognition he deserves will always feel incredible. Such an astute, talented & grounded performer/actor who deserves every bit of good that comes his way! #TonyAwards,” one person wrote on the social media platform.
