Mega hip hop producer Metro Boomin’, 30, has been in the hot seat ever since he and rap star Future, 40, dropped their collaborative album WE DON’T TRUST YOU late last month. Like That, one of the breakout songs on their album, had the internet going wild because of the verse that legendary-level lyricist Kendrick Lamar spit on the track.
Many took Lamar’s part in Like That as him throwing shade at rappers Drake, 37, and J.Cole, 39, seemingly retaliating against them for how they indirectly snubbed the Poetic Justice rapper on their 2023 record together, First Person Shooter. Some fans speculated that Lamar was able to drop the brash bars on Metro Boomin’s collective project because Metro Boomin’ also had a problem with Mr. OVO.
Although the Bank Account producer denies that he’s at odds with Drake, some of WE DON’T TRUST YOU suggest otherwise. So does a post that Metro Boomin’ shared on X, fka Twitter, on Tuesday.
“It all started 2 days before the album dropped and all these 416 numbers would call me back 2 back a million times. It got so bad I had to keep my phone on airplane mode,” Metro Boomin’ wrote on the platform.
Added to his tweet was a screenshot of his iPhone call log, which showed that he had missed calls from several different numbers with the Toronto, Canada, area code 416. Drake, who is originally from Toronto, was believed to be the one “spam calling” Metro Boomin’ by most hip-hop fans.
“Drake spam calling,” one fan asserted on X, along with attaching a meme of Drake looking at his phone.
“Drake sent his goons,” another presented.
“Drake really harassing this man,” a third X user joked.
“Drake too scared to call you out man to man so he’s using fake text free app numbers LMAOOO,” someone else assumed.
Metro Boomin’ didn’t reveal the person who was calling him, nor did he confirm or deny it was Drake who was.
Between the drama, the fan theories, and Lamar’s killer verse, it’s no surprise that Like That is now number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and WE DON’T TRUST YOU is the number one album on the Billboard 200 albums chart this week. Those who seem to be in Drake’s corner have been claiming that Metro Boomin’ wouldn’t be in the number one spot had it not been for all of the publicity that came from Lamar dissing Drake on his album.
Metro Boomin’ recently clapped back at those assumptions, setting the record straight via an Instagram comment.
“Album was going #1 regardless. There was gonna be a #1 single regardless. Get off, d*ck. That man don’t even know y’all,” he wrote.
While Metro Boomin’ might not be on bad terms with Drake, there definitely seems to be tension between them. Metro Boomin’ and Drake’s reported brewing beef could possibly stem from when the former passed on including a verse from the actor-turned-rapper on his 2022 album Heroes & Villains.
Most likely, it has to do with Metro Boomin’ shaming award shows for seemingly gratuitously giving accolades to Drake and 21 Savage’s joint 2022 album Her Loss in a tweeted and deleted post.
“Her Loss still keeps winning rap album of the year over H&V,” Metro Boomin’ tweeted.
“Proof that award shows are just politics and not for me. Idc about awards honestly, the true award and REWARD is knowing that the music I spend so much time on brings joy to people’s everyday lives.”
Not letting Metro Boomin’s shade slide, Drake went on a live stream shortly after Metro Boomin’s tweet-and-delete to speak to all of the tweet-and-deleters worldwide.
“And to the rest of you,” Drake said at the time, “the non-believers, the underachievers, the tweet-and-deleters, you guys make me sick to my stomach, fam.” Drake and Metro Boomin’ no longer follow each other on social media following Drake’s live stream.
As of now, it looks like Lamar isn’t the only one beefing with Drake.
