The scripted show Calabasas is now in Netflix’s hands, and with it comes the renowned Kim Kardashian, Emma Roberts, and I. Marlene King, who is most famous for creating Pretty Little Liars. The show is based on Via Bleidner’s book If You Lived Here You’d Be Famous By Now, which features a young girl who moves to the star location—the sun-drenched city of Calabasas in California.
The book from which the series is being adapted is more of a coming-of-age collection, featuring various stories of the startled girl’s arrival in the city, which is defined by its celebrity culture—something far and away from her life in the Midwest. King is the writer and showrunner, working alongside a cadre of producers, such as Lauren Wagner, Matt Matruski, and reality star Kardashian, 43.
The 43-year-old Skims founder and aspiring attorney is going to be an executive producer on the show, a role that she’s not new to being in. Aside from her namesake series, Keeping Up With The Kardashians and The Kardashians, she was also the head of the production on such as You Kiddin’ Me, the KUWTK spinoff featuring her brother Robert Kardashian, Rob & Chyna, and Glam Masters, according to IMDB.
Along with the Calabasas, the mom of four also has a couple more projects coming up, most notably The Fifth Wheel. Kardashian’s involvement in Calabasas seems fitting, as her famous long-running reality series has people sold on the city, according to the Wrap. This would also not be the first time that Kardashian and Roberts worked together, as they famously starred together in Season 12 of American Horror Story, AHS: Delicate.
Calabasas may as well now be synonymous with the allure of fame and stardom, a theme that Kardashian has capitalized on. While it does seem unlikely that KUWTK and The Kardashians will sit in the shadow of these projects, it does show that the original influencer is still serious about working with big-shot productions.
Calabasas enables her to revisit the location and give it a new meaning for a new audience under a fresh narrative light, thereby offering it to a new, broader audience that might not otherwise care for the reality drama she is most famous for. With King at the helm, it is likely to draw attention from those looking to sink their teeth into an enthralling drama.
From what we know now, at the very least, there is an allure in integrating a high-profile setting with the universal appeal of the book’s coming-of-age themes. With Kardashian and Roberts reuniting under King’s writing, Calabasas stands poised to offer a unique experience.
