Jefferson Mays, the Tony winner of I Am My Own Wife, will be starring in Pasadena’s Playhouse 2026 production of Tony-winning Amadeus.
A production made by Peter Shaffer, the big stage will star Mays, who is well-known and successful in his career. He received a Tony nomination for his portrayal and performance in Oslo and A Gentleman‘s Guide to Love & Murder.
Mays, who previously had a significant role in Law & Order and Law & Order: SVU, will play Mozart’s rival, Salleri. However, he won’t be the only one from The Gentlemen’s Guide to play a part in this production. Tony winner Darko Tresnjak will be one of the directors for the production, which is now scheduled for February 11 to March 8, 2026.
So far, they’re still conducting additional casting and adding members to their creative team. Updates to the project will be announced at a later date.
The play originally premiered at London’s National in 1979, starring Paul Schofield and Simon Callow. The following year, it made it to Broadway with Ian McKellen and Tim Curry as part of the film. In 1984, there was a film version, which Milo Forman directed along with F Murray Abraham and Tom Hulce, who starred in the movie.
The film was successful and won eight Academy Awards. By 1999, the play was rebooted and flourished throughout the 1990s and 2000s in London. Amadeus has multiple plays and was successful across many media, such as radio plays.
Other classics that are taking place in Pasadena‘s playhouse are ha ha ha ha ha, which was performed by Julia Masli and directed by Kim Noble. Unlike Amadeus, this performance will take place this year from October 15 to November 9, 2025. Masli is also a successful performer.
Their solo comedy was a 2023 Edinburgh Festival French hit. The synopsis for the show is a trained clown with a bronze leg solving the problems of audience members.
Danny Feldman, a Pasadena Playhouse producing artistic director, says in a statement, “When I saw Julia Masli show last year, unlike anything I had ever experienced in a theater. From Edinburgh to New York, audiences have been laughing, crying and connecting with each other nightly thanks to this unique theatrical experience.”
Feldman continues on in his statement and expresses excitement for the play this fall.
“I’m delighted that our Playhouse community will have the chance to fall in love with Julia this fall. Looking ahead, we are honored to welcome the extraordinary Jefferson Mays as Salieri in Amadeus, under the visionary direction of Darko Tresnak. Two of the American Theatre’s most talented artists are coming together for a thrilling production that can’t be missed,” he states.
