The Oscars took place on Sunday, and again took the world by storm.
Doja Cat, Raye, and Lisa collaborated on a tribute to 007’s legacy. The James Bond Tribute occurred not long after Amazon MGM announced it would gain creative control of the James Bond franchise. All three artists sang notable songs from the franchise, and Margaret Qualley danced to the Bond theme.
The tribute performance started with a Substance sequence, which featured actress Margaret Qualley performing a dance routine. After the dance, Black Pink member Lisa appeared and sang Wings Live and Let Die, the theme from the 1973 film. Towards the end of Lisa’s part, she led to Doja Cat’s part, where she would sing Diamonds Are Forever, by the iconic Shirley Bassey. After Doja Cat, Raye covered Adele’s Skyfall.
Despite the three of them not having any connections to the franchise, people speculated that they joined to promote their joint single, Born Again, even though they did not sing it.
Some fans, however, were not pleased with the overall performance. Critics say the performance was “pointless” and that the singers failed to address the questions surrounding the franchise’s future and, importantly, who will lead after Daniel Craig.
Fans were also not pleased with Doja’s part of the performance. One commenter on X wrote, “Doja Cat’s performance was good for like a High school talent show, but the Oscars? Be serious.”
Another commenter on X wrote, “Me listening to Doja Cat sing diamonds are forever. Torture.”
The Say So singer took to Instagram the day after the event to address the backlash she received. She wrote, “I never get to sing like that, and what I did was brave and scary as f**k to me. I know a lot of people didn’t like it, but a lot of people did, and I feel good that I pushed myself. The song is a classic and I put a lot of work into it but the nerves got to me and a b**ch hit some flats.”
An onslaught of support from fans and other celebrities also accompanied some of the backlash.
“She must be tired because she never stops slaying.” said one comment.
“I don’t get how people didn’t like it.” another fan commented.
Raye, who performed alongside her, wrote: “I’m very proud of you.”
Towards the end of her statement, Doja mentioned that she couldn’t wait to do something like this again.
“I can’t wait to do something like that again. What a blessing that was. I feel amazing about the whole thing. Bye!” Doja wrote.
