With the unexpected and sometimes inexplicable surge in the popularity of reusable water bottles, it’s no surprise that consumers are into staying hydrated.
Current trends show that people want their water and they are looking for variety it the otherwise, unexciting necessity. Whole Foods Market reports that add-in flavors from concentrated liquids to powders can add a bit of fun to your drink.
Taking it a step further, we have had the option of an electrolyte-packed drink like Gatorade or Powerade. If you’re trying to stay on track with your water intake, you may see cactus water with electrolytes or even protein water to help you hit your protein goal.
Coconut water has long been known to be naturally hydrating, high in nutrients, may be good for those with diabetes as well as those suffering from kidney stones and heart issues. You can drink it prepackaged or mix it with your dressings or even make a chia seed pudding for an extra dose of healthy ingredients. Companies also entice the younger generation with water that comes in pouches or mini coconuts.
Perhaps a driving force behind the interest in water is the vessel in which it is carried. There are several choices on the market, but more recently Stanley cups have skyrocketed in popularity. Trending on social media, the tumblers come in variety of sizes and colors, and sometimes collaborate with a popular movie or theme. This newfound obsession spans a few generations and is making headlines as shoppers are physically fighting to grab a limited edition mug. In just 4 years, Stanley’s sales have gone from $70 million to $750 million. There currently is a recall on Stanley travel mugs as the company is pulling 2.6 million of them from shelves due to a problem with the lids shrinking if they’re exposed to too much heat.
Gatorade is possibly one of the first hydrating drinks on the market, beating the trends we see now. Originally made for the Florida Gators athletics teams, a group of researchers created the drink in 1965. The drink has solidified it’s position in pop culture as it inadvertently became part of sports traditions where the coach is surprised with a “Gatorade Shower” at the end of the game. The prank became popularized in the mid-1980s with the New York Giants. Today, Gatorade is the leading non-alcoholic sports drink and is worth over $5 billion.
