For the second time, America has elected Donald Trump as President Of The United States. Last night, nearly two years after his announcement for his campaign reelection, Trump won over current Vice President Kamala Harris.
Trump seemed to take the lead early in the evening, with political commentators speculating that a Trump victory would be the greatest political comeback in our time. Needing 270 electoral votes to win the title, Trump landed at 277. Harris clocked in 224 votes. Republicans have won control of the Senate, flipping three seats, totaling at 52. Democrats have 42 seats in the Senate. The House of Representatives is still to be determined, but as of now, the House has flipped five seats for Republicans at 204. There are 218 needed to take the majority. Democrats are at 182 seats.
Trump managed to break down parts of the “Blue Wall,” historically Democratic states. Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Georgia all flipped to Republican, with all three proving to be tight races. Exit polls show that he also made gains in nearly every demographic, including Latino voters, who showed up in the polls with 45% of the vote, compared to four years ago, when he only had 32% of their votes.
Harris chose to not address her supporters late last night at Howard University as it became apparent that she had most likely lost the race. Instead, she is expected to address the nation and concede the race at 4p.m. EST, according to source close to her campaign. She became the Democratic nominee when President Joe Biden dropped out of the race in July, with concerns of his health and physical abilities to run for re-election.
Like all politicians, Trump made many promises during his campaign run. Once he takes office officially, he plans to begin the largest mass deportation the country has ever seen, undoing months of the Biden administration’s allowance of immigrants to enter the country. Trump also plans to cut funding to schools who teach critical race theories and encourage transgender matters as well as end the war in the Ukraine.
World leaders are reacting to his victory. Support from the Ukraine, Great Britain, and India is pouring in, some calling it “history’s greatest comeback.” Prime Minister of the UK, Keir Starmer says via X, formerly Twitter, “I look forward to working with you in the years ahead.”
His second time in office, Trump first served as our 45th President from 2016 to 2020. During his tenure, he cut taxes to the middle class by signing the largest tax reform package in history, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. He also doubled the child tax credit and allowed small businesses to deduct 20 percent of their business income. He helped the US achieve the title of number one producer of oil and natural gas in the world and approved the Keystone XL and Dakota Access pipelines.
His first presidency ended ugly when his supporters attempted a U.S. Capitol take over on January 6, 2021. Storming the building, they invaded and interrupted Congress in an attempt to prevent the certification of the election results. Six people died in the incident, one shot by Capitol Police, one police officer was killed after being attacked by rioters, three died by natural causes, one by drug overdose. About 2,000 people were estimated to have participated in the act that day, leaving Trump impeached from office for incitement of insurrection a week later.
Inauguration Day will take place on Monday, January 20, 2025.
