Rapper and internet star Bhad Bhabie announced she is dealing with a cancer diagnosis. The 21-year-old made the announcement by way of responding to fans wondering about her physique. Having recently lost weight, Bhabie, whose real name is Danielle Bregoli, says the loss is due to medication she is taking to combat her disease.
Bhabie has not specified which medication is causing the weight loss nor has she mentioned the type of cancer. In response to her fans on Instagram, she says “I’m sorry my cancer medication made me loose [sic] weight. I’m slowly gaining it back. So stop running w the worst narratives.”
Besides the critics, there are some who are coming to her defense, pointing out the fact that she recently had a baby. Bhabie gave birth to her first child in March of this year and the baby is shared with Bhabie’s boyfriend, Le Vaughn. “Y’all stop commenting on her physical appearance. You have no idea what negativity or positivity she could be experiencing. Reminder that it takes a mother a MINIMUM of 3 full years for her body to regular back to how it was before getting pregnant. Give her grace.”
Bhabie is quite young to have this diagnosis. The risk of cancer increases with age and there are about 4% of the population ages 20-39 who are diagnosed with cancer. Certain types of the disease like bone and brain cancer can affect young adults. Additionally, Hodgkin Lymphoma, a blood cancer, affects those 15 to 40 years old.
Weight loss is one of many side effects that cancer drug treatments have on the body. Others include loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, gastrointestinal issues, trouble sleeping and more.
Bhabie came to internet fame in 2016 when she appeared on the Dr. Phil show with her mother. At the time, she was 13 years old and was interviewed by the host of the show regarding her outrageous behavior including car theft. In response to the audience laughing at her behavior, Bhabie told the collective, “Catch me outside, how ’bout that?” The phrase was a near-instant internet meme and she quickly became known as the “Cash Me Outside Girl.”
Bhabie was later sent to a home for troubled teens where she was arrested for marijuana possession and grand theft. She received probation but it was later dismissed. In 2017, Bhabie released her first single, These Heaux, which landed at number 77 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, making her the youngest female rapper to have a song on the charts.
