Elon Musk’s recent announcement on the updated X, fka Twitter, community guidelines is a surprise that some saw coming after the billionaire businessman renamed the social media app X.
Although adult content has always been prevalent on X, even when it was still Twitter, it is now protected under the updated X rules that were released over the weekend. X considers adult content to be anything that is “consensually produced and distributed material depicting adult nudity or sexual behavior that is pornographic or intended to cause sexual arousal,” Deadline reported.
This means that X users can let it hang out a bit more without risking having their accounts banned.
“We believe in the autonomy of adults to engage with and create content that reflects their own beliefs, desires, and experiences, including those related to sexuality,” X’s Adult Content page explains.
“We balance this freedom by restricting exposure to Adult Content for children or adult users who choose not to see it. We also prohibit content promoting exploitation, nonconsent, objectification, sexualization or harm to minors, and obscene behaviors,” the page added. “We also do not allow sharing Adult Content in highly visible places such as profile photos or banners.”
It’s no secret Twitter-turned-X has been known for hosting a lot more porn than its contemporaries. Instagram has strict no-nudity and sexual community guidelines on the site. Several X users have had a lot to say about the latest change.
“Now that Elon Musk has officially normalised porn on this app, dear onlyfans content creators, it’s high time you take this into consideration Thank you,” one internet user shared on X.
A second person joked: “OnlyFans ads on the TL now that X greenlit porn.”
Others worried that the update is going to bring a different energy to the platform.
While this may change how users interact with the content, there isn’t much change. This update isn’t more salacious than the corners of the platform that already house porn. Nor will it change what’s already considered an X violation from being enforceable.
An X rep told Deadline in a statement that the platform, “launched Adult Content and Violent Content policies — but what we enforce against has not changed – we launched these policies to clarify our Rules and increase transparency on our enforcement.”
“These policies replace our former Sensitive Media and Violent Speech policies which means we continue to act on these types of content with the exact same philosophy,” the rep added in the statement.
