Just because it’s only Thursday and you’re not at the local boozy Sunday brunch with Tevin Campbell’s song Can We Talk playing in the background doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a skinny glass of champagne and orange juice. That’s because it’s National Mimosa Day, and it’s also happy hour somewhere in the world right now.
May 16 marks National Mimosa Day. Though Jace Shoemaker Galloway is credited with “most likely” founding the holiday in the early 2000s, the drink itself dates to the early 20th century. It was first served at The Ritz Hotel in Paris in 1925. Famous bartender Frank Meier is said to be the creator of the Mimosa, which is named after a yellow plant called “the mimosa flower.”
This bubbly lore is enough to make you grab your best skinny champagne glasses, champagne, or sparkling wine and follow these recipes to celebrate in style.
The Classic
The Classic: Don’t reinvent the wheel. The classic mimosa is one-part sparkling wine and orange juice, equal parts of both… or not, depending on your preference.
Ingredients:
Sparkling wine or Champagne: A Prosecco or Brut is perfect.
Orange juice: Any brand or, if you’re fancy, freshly squeezed is good… and yes, no pulp!
Blood Orange Mimosa
This drink screams ‘rich Aunty who comes in, barring fruitful gifts, and knows how to liven up a function.’ The Blood Orange Mimosa is a classy, upgraded mimosa that doesn’t veer off too much from the original!
Ingredients:
Sparkling wine or Champagne
St Germain: A French liqueur with a floral taste and citrus undertones.
Blood orange juice: Different from the classic Florida orange, blood oranges are more tangy with a less sweet finish

Non-Alcoholic Mimosa
Non-drinkers and designated drivers can still enjoy mimosas, too. This mimosa version is for our responsible friends who keep track of our bags at the club, and make sure we all walk together to the bathroom. Just because this cocktail is alcohol-free doesn’t mean it’s any less enjoyable!
Ingredients:
Orange juice: Yes, still no pulp!
Non-alcoholic beverages: Here’s a list of a few different options.
Ginger Ale
Sparkling Lemonade
Non-alcoholic sparkling wine
Apple Cider

Cranberry Mimosa
This cocktail will probably perform best during the holiday season or if the aforementioned boozy brunch runs low on 100% orange juice and the crowd starts to get indignant. This recipe still calls for orange juice, so don’t worry—this isn’t a GMO mimosa.
Frozen cranberries
Cranberry juice: Oceanspray will do just fine
Pineapple Orange juice
Sparkling wine
Orange twist
Mint sprig

Pineapple Jalapeño Mimosa
This recipe from Dash of Jazz is the mimosa you find on Pinterest right before the friends come over for the stay-at-home brunch, where deviating from the classic is safe, fun, and won’t result in mixed reviews on Yelp!
Ingredients :
Jalapeño sliced
Pineapple juice
Champagne
