As the year 2026, approaches midyear, people in multiple countries are still reeling, and facing challenges when it comes to finding employment.
With oversaturated job markets, massive layoffs, and challenging communication between job seekers and recruiters, as well as the increased use of AI, unemployed people seeking jobs are having little to no success.
“My son and daughter 18 and 21 had applied for over 60 positions and nothing both high school graduates with different experiences. This is ridiculous. What are our kids gonna do?” said one mother on TikTok.
In Canada, the unemployment rate for young adults between the ages of 20 to 29 has hit a record high of 8.1%. This is higher than the 2022 average of 6.4 and the 2019 average of 5.9%.
Meanwhile, as of 2026, in the United States, people aged 22 to 27 have an unemployment rate was 5.7%, which is also a record high. People who were a part of that percentage were facing daily challenges when it came to finding work, Isaac Evans, being one of them.
“Some of my biggest challenges was finding a company that wanted to hire me, because there is a lot of companies that want multiple years of experience. The people that they want with that kind of experience are already employed at better jobs or are retired,” Evans said.
In the field of journalism, most entry-level markets require candidates to have two to four years of experience, with internships under their belt. The same thing can be said for other fields, such as nursing and technology.
Another issue that job seekers are running into are oversaturated job markets. Multiple companies, such as the Washington Post and Disney, have participated in massive layoffs of their workforce.
With these layoffs, there are many job seekers entering unemployment and seeking roles from companies that often only hiring one candidate. Because of this, recruiters often can become overwhelmed with the number of candidates which can often lead to ghosting or bad communication.
“If you have a company that has 300 jobs listed right now, you might have five recruiters for all 300 of those roles. It used to be like 12 to 15 recruiters to one company, one department and one company so it takes a long time to go through resumes,” said TikTok star Kourtlynn Faith.
Because of these circumstances, it can take weeks to even months for a successful gig, which often leads to long-term employment for some job seekers.
“I was looking for a new job for about six months, but I’ve been unemployed up to a year,” Evans said.
As of March 2026, the average time for unemployment has been six months, which has been higher than it was pre-pandemic. As the weeks and months go by in the year of 2026 with the rise of AI and more massive layoffs coming in the near future there is no sign of relief.
