Fashion is once again experimenting with style blending late 20th century designs with the attitude of the 2010s grunge, calling it polished rock.
Polished rock is a result of continued nostalgia from brands and fans holding onto nostalgia for past runway styles. A return to bold, refined aesthetics that go against the trend of the clean aesthetic or quiet luxury for aesthetic perfection.
Hints of this retro style emerged during Fall 2025 of fashion week with fashion designer Chemena Kamai, who debuted an updated Paddington bag for the French fashion house Chloé’s fall 2025 collection.
The return of the prodigal It bag is girlish yet grunge rendered in grain leather that looks worn in giving the bag a distressed texture and effortless undone look with an oversized and chunky padlock and metalwork details. The bag itself has a nonchalant attitude perfect for everyday wear.
Saint Laurent also returned to its 80s archive of decadent lace and gold accessories.
And artistic director Kim Bekker of Isabel Marant, who wanted a reset this season, opted for a more tousled but composed look that oozed subtle sexiness. Bekker turned to British rock bands like Siouxsie, the Banshees, as well as Morant herself, for inspiration, which led to tailored silhouettes and an IDGAF attitude to her fall 2025 collection.
A lace blouse paired with a masculine coat to evoke an ideal of delicacy and romance with something tough over it, a look of balance and gloss with an intentional undone-ness.
Womenswear is now seen borrowing from traditional masculine silhouettes, much like in the 80s, where bigger was better. Oversized clothing, accessories, exaggerated shapes, bold proportions, and over the top style were celebrated, and now it is being revived thanks to fashion and social media.
Take Aaron Esh, for instance, an independent designer known for his London-based label that blends traditional tailoring with a contemporary style who has been operating on the outskirts of this trend. Esh’s designs subvert traditional menswear with soft, elegant, and romantic elements inspired by womenswear and haute couture.
Traditional or ultra-feminine ideals of womanhood are making a comeback.
However, unlike its late predecessor of indie sleaze, a style that is eclectic and messy chic of a grubby glam look that blends grunge, punk, and hipster styles from the late 2000s, the revival of grunge styles is more of an elevated, polished, cleaner, more curated, and refined style a more minimally bold look.
Polished rock is on the rise, allowing fans of whatever style they wear, whether it be boho, punk, or grunge, to craft their own interpretation, be bold, and elevate their look with an elevated yet polished style of rock.
