Non-FDA Approved ‘At Home’ Cosmetic Procedure Is Rising in Popularity

As Innotox gains popularity on social media platforms, like TikTok, the trending cosmetic procedure raises significant concerns among experts.

Innotox contains botulinum toxin, which is known for its ability to block nerve signals and relax muscles, similar to Botox.

Unlike Botox, which comes as a powder, Innotox is a ready-to-use liquid, making it easier to self-administer while providing the same results as Botox injections.

While achieving Botox-like results at home with Innotox might seem appealing, the self-injection cosmetic procedure can lead to serious complications such as eyelid drooping, infections, or even botulism, which can cause paralysis or death if left untreated or not treated promptly.

However, while the high cost of Botox and the influence of social media have encouraged many viewers to try this new trend, access to Innotox should not be readily accessible.

Innotox is not FDA-approved in the US nor is it licensed for use in the UK, the US, or other countries, suggesting that the quality and safety of the product have not yet been evaluated.

Innotox can be easily purchased online and is also being sold illegally in the UK to unqualified and unregulated providers, which is quite alarming, to say the least.

UK health officials reported at least 41 cases within the past month, and according to the CDC, as of December 17, 2024, there have been at least 17 cases.

Although the investigation has closed, the CDC continues to receive reports of cases related to unsafe counterfeit products or injections among people who received botulinum toxin injections from individuals who were not following state or local requirements.

Tom Albright, CEO of Luvantas, a subsidiary of Madytox, that produces Innotox, stated that the company became aware in June of the unauthorized importation to the US, UK, and other countries and has opened an investigation, according to The Guardian.

Albright also emphasized that “botulinum toxin should be administered only by qualified healthcare professionals in a medically appropriate setting” and warned “healthcare providers and consumers against purchasing unapproved or misrepresented botulinum toxins through unauthorized channels.”
