This West Coast-based food chain recently announced that specific changes will be made following the new rule.
Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) intends to phase out synthetic dyes in the food supply. Things such as Skittles, Fruit Loops, and other rainbow colored foods are considered to be changed.
In-N-Out falls under these categories, and due to this ruling, they plan on changing specific recipes. The recipe in question is its popular strawberry shake and pink lemonade, which contains red dye No. 40.
Other changes In-N-Out will make are through their ketchup, which removes high fructose corn syrup and replaces it with real sugar.
In a statement, In-N-Out owner and President Lynsi Snyder told Newsweek that they would replace red dye with beta carotene and vegetable juice.
“We’ve additionally introduced a healthier beverage sweetener option by replacing sucralose and saccharin sweetener packets with stevia leaf extract and added non-dairy alternative oatmeal creamer,” she added. “We’re also in the process of transitioning to ketchup made with real sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup, and researching an even better quality oil for our fries.”
In-N-Out will be the first food chain to start making these changes. The Trump administration plans to remove synthetic dyes from the food supply by the end of next year, marking “a major step forward.”
According to the Trump Administration, these dyes have been linked to neurological problems in some children.
“For too long, some producers have been feeding Americans petroleum-based chemicals without their knowledge or consent,” Kennedy said. “These poisonous compounds offer no nutritional benefit and pose real, measurable dangers to our children’s health and development.”
Kennedy soon added, “We’re restoring gold-standard science, applying common sense, and beginning to earn back the public trust, and we’re doing it by working with industry to get these toxic dyes out of the foods our families eat every day.”
In a cabinet meeting that took place in April, Kennedy made claims that these good dyes affect children’s “academic performance, violence in schools, and mental health, as well as physical health.”
The FDA is currently fast-tracking the review of natural alternatives for synthetic dyes, and the agencies are taking steps to provide guidance and action.
“We have a new epidemic of childhood diabetes, obesity, depression, and ADHD.” FDA Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary said. “Given the growing concerns of doctors and parents about the potential role of petroleum-based food dyes. We should not be taking risks and do everything possible to safeguard the health of our children.”
