The first 2024 Presidential Debate broadcast on CNN last Thursday, June 27, and was moderated by anchors Jake Tapper and Dana Bash.
Like an upcoming heavyweight fight, this Debate was heavily promoted by the cable news shows. Fox News, MSNBC as well as CNN predicted the performances of President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump for weeks. Would Joe Biden show up strong the way that he did at the last State of the Union Address? Would Donald Trump speak out of turn? CNN’s rules for the debate were no audience to take sides and cheer their candidate on, muted microphones when the other is speaking, and apparently, no fact-checking.
Liberal political strategists, the political pundits and the left leaning global media were biting their nails prior to this debate. Praying that Joe Biden would win over those few undecided swing state voters that are ultimately going to decide who the next U.S. President will be. Hoping that the Joe Biden who recently gave us an amazing State of the Union address would show up, and not “sleepy” Joe Biden, as right-wing media calls him. Pumped up and ready to make the case that he is up to the job to be the President for four more years.
Nerves were definitely high prior to the debate among many Democrats. Not sure the President could win those voters over. President Biden has not been looking strong in some of the recent media coverage. Videos of him stumbling, falling off of a bicycle, and walking really slowly emerge frequently.
It was reported that the president was doing debate preparation for days with 16 advisors. Can we all agree that was way too much?
Leading up to the Debate, Democrats continued to say that State of the Union Biden had to show up if Democrats are going to win this fall. But Americans who are in the real world and not in a bubble, didn’t expect State of the Union Biden to show up.
The media and democrat operatives set the bar extremely high for President Biden. He was never going to reach that. The debate was later in the evening and yes, he is 81-years-old.
When President Biden could not reach it, they panicked, through him under the bus, and called for him to be replaced as the top of the ticket. Who are they to make that decision without consulting with the voters? If they want to for sure lose, replace Joe Biden as the Democrat nominee.
Most people understand that there is a difference between giving a prepared speech that is read by the President from a teleprompter and having to answer in detail every question posed by moderators about American policy. And with no notes to refer to. Most Americans just want to know what the President was planning to do about inflation, the astronomical cost of home prices, the crime rate, the war in Ukraine and in Gaza, immigration, and the climate. Presently, America’s economy is the best in the world. But many Americans say they do not feel that way.
At the beginning of the Debate, both President Biden and former President Trump, walked on to the stage. President Biden did walk out slowly and did look tired. He looked as if he had been up all-night cramming for finals and now test day is here. And though he was exhausted, he was there to take the test.
President Biden stumbled over his words at times, but answered every question he was asked. There were times when he struggled to find the right words to get his point across, but it was clear what he was trying to convey.
With all of that happening, not much was mentioned about 78-year-old former President Trump’s performance, who did look somewhat stronger, but not much. When Trump was asked most questions, he either did not answer, answered untruthfully or answered vaguely. But mostly he pivoted to something other than the question he was being asked. But because he was not his usual combative self, he was given extra points. More points than President Biden by the way, though he did not even attempt to answer any questions about American Policy. Trump did manage to insult the black voters he is trying to win over. He said that immigrants are taking black jobs. Excuse me, but what is a “black job?”
Are these archaic Debates really necessary? For the first time in our history, we have an incumbent president and a former president competing to have a second term. Unless you have been in a cave, you know what these two men have done on the job and what their agenda is for the future of this country.
Yesterday, President Biden had a rally in North Carolina. He bounced back strong. He told an excited and cheering crowd, “I Know I’m not a young man, state the obvious.” He went on to say ,“Folks I don’t walk as easily as I used to, I don’t speak as smoothly as I used to, I don’t Debate as well as I use to, but I know what I do know, I know how to tell the truth.” He said, “I would not be running again, if I didn’t believe with all my heart and soul, I could do this job. Because quite frankly, the stakes are too high.” The crowd shouted four more years.
