Kehlani seems to be embracing the resurgence of the Y2K era for their forthcoming single. The proud 28-year-old LGBTQ+ songstress took to Instagram on Tuesday to share a preview of the music their planning to release in the near future.
In the song promo snippet that Kehlani uploaded to their Instagram Stories, they were seductively playing with their fluffy curls in front of the mirror where they were recording. The Nunya crooner wore a black, skin-hugging tank top dress that clung to their petite figure.
The dim lighting Kehlani filmed in made their clip appear as if it was filmed on an old-school video camera, which was appropriate since their soon-to-be released record samples Nina Sky’s, a Latin R&B/Hip Hop duo, hit 2004 song “Move Ya Body.”
They only teased the beat of the unreleased track, spotlighting the slight tweaks made to the original music so it could suit the vision of their song.
While Kehlani protected the integrity of “Move Ya Body,” albeit slowing it down slightly, they seemed to have transformed it so it sounded closer to an Afrobeat.
Afrobeats, which derives from Nigeria, is a musical style taking the world by storm. It incorporates distinct drum patterns, smooth rhythms, and other enchanting qualities.
It appears that Kehlani is now hopping on the Afrobeats trend, at least for this song.
Kehlani mentioned in her Stories that although fans “couldn’t dance to their last album [Blue Water Road],” their new album will have people “outside this go around.”
Fans of the Grammy-nominated artist couldn’t contain their excitement for their impending tune on X, fka Twitter.
“This sounds so good ??!!! Oh [their] taking every stream from me,” one fan tweeted.
Another added: “We will be streaming.”
Someone else remarked: “This is gonna be [fire emojis].”
Kehlani’s last album, Blue Water Road, was released in 2022, and their last single, Everything from the Blue Water Road album, came out the same year.
