Last week, organizers announced that Kanye West would headline the Wireless Festival in North London for three nights in July The announcement caused so much outrage among politicians and festival sponsors that some have now withdrew sponsorships.
West, now known as Ye, has become quite the controversial artist over the years for his comments and behaviors caught by the media. This includes antisemitic comments, praising the Nazis, political controversies regarding conservative viewpoints, and online harassment.
Earlier this year, Ye issued an apology for his antisemitic behavior and comments in a full-page ad in The Wall Street Journal. Ye apologized for his actions and behavior due to a manic episode of bipolar disorder. A mental illness that the artist has been transparent about.
Despite the controversy, backlash, and outrage Ye has caused amongst many, Ye manages to remain relevant, selling out shows.
After the announcement that Ye would headline the Wireless Festival, Diageo, owner of liquor brands such as Johnnie Walker and Captain Morgan, along with soda brands such as Pepsi, and the Festival Republic Team have reportedly pulled sponsorship.
Along with the U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer denouncing Ye’s upcoming performance. Starmer told The Sun newspaper that it was “deeply concerning” Ye had been booked to perform at the Wireless Festival, given his previous antisemitic remarks and praise of the Nazis.
In 2025, Ye had released a song “Heil Hitler” praising Hitler as well as selling swastika T-shirts on his clothing site, Yeezy.
“Antisemitism in any form is abhorrent and must be confronted firmly wherever it appears. Everyone has a responsibility to ensure Britain is a place where Jewish people feel safe,” said Starmer.
Pepsi, the main sponsor for the Wireless Festival, announced on Sunday, as well that they have “decided to withdraw its sponsorship” with BBC News. This decision came hours after the Prime Minister criticized the festival’s decision to book Ye.
Followed by Diageo informing organizers of their concerns before withdrawing their sponsorship, too.
Ye has lost major brand partnerships and business deals, including Adidas and Balenciaga, over the years due to his behavior. Ye continues to perform despite major backlash, supported by a loyal fanbase and high demand. Many fans separate the art from the artists.
Whether praised or condemned, Ye continues to make headlines, proving that in today’s media, even the most polarizing publicity can keep an artist impossible to ignore, as Ye just sold out two shows in Los Angeles. Ye has set the record for the biggest concert in U.S. Hip Hop history with zero marketing following the release of his 12th studio album, Bully, on March 28, and is still expected to headline at the Wireless Festival, July 10 – 12.
